I think he has a point, but doesn’t reach the right conclusion. RAM is in short supply and critical to a functioning country. As such, I propose that we nationalize all data centers.

Interestingly, normies who argue against nationalization of private property tend to say “commies want to nationalize my toothbrush”, etc. not understanding the difference between private property (data centers) and personal property (consumer-grade RAM, for instance).

So, funny enough, Altman is advocating for the cartoon villain version of communism where the centralized authority (Sam Altman) nationalizes your personal property (RAM).

Meanwhile, folks actually in favor of nationalization to reap the benefits of planned systems of production would not try to steal your RAM, but would take Altman’s datacenters for the public good.

By that logic should poor or stupid people give up their organs to the intelligent and wealthy… Hmmmm…

Having oxygen in Sam Altman’s lungs is an inefficient use of the world’s limited air.

You mean like the Tulip Mania of the 1600s?

I hope it’ll lead to similar art too 😁

A Satire of Tulip Mania by Jan Brueghel the Younger (c. 1640) depicts speculators as brainless monkeys in contemporary upper-class dress. In a commentary on the economic folly, one monkey urinates on the previously valuable plants, others appear in debtor’s court and one is carried to the grave.

Don’t get me wrong, having large amounts of RAM and lots of CPU muscle has made software terribly inefficient. An everyday user shouldn’t have to have more than 8-16 GB and perhaps 4 cores to get by. That said, wtf are we even talking about here? The solution to too little RAM is making more or using less. Memory is a commodity, not a privilige.

PC architecture in general is pretty shitty for RAM use. OS takes a load, browsers take a load, games seem to want RAM on the GPU backed up by RAM on your motherboard, every driver and utility comes with it’s own browser just to display a few buttons.

It’s been too wasteful for too long, assuming the prices would always go down so what’s a gig here and there. Well now they’re going up, so everyone is fucked.

i would argue that os creep is a problem. 2-4 gb should be more than enough for 99.9% of usage.

gaming, or computational demanding jobs, need more. but for the majority of people, if it wasn’t for OS creep, 2-4 gb is enough

I’m not sure if the average Joe should get by with only 8-16 GB of RAM. This is only the case today because we off-loaded so much of our applications to the Cloud.

If we care about running our applications with our own devices and reclaim the ownership of our data we should advocate to be able to get as much RAM we want.

That is true of course, all I meant to say is that using a web browser shouldn’t demand more than 8 GB of RAM. On Linux, with zswap, you can probably get away with it. On Windows? Probably a horrible experience (the persistent horrors of Windows aside).

They don’t just get ownership. They taught us that isn’t optimal.

You give him access to a VM he can use. For 5000 a month. It’s for his benefit.

Keeping all the money in billionaire’s personal holdings is a very inefficient use of resources that would be much better allocated to fixing our collapsing roads, bridges, public transport, health system, education, justice system, elections and media.

Having billions of dollars tied up in personal fortunes, where they just sit idle most of the time, is an inefficient use of the world’s money supply, and who would have thought Altman would be the one to point it out?

Aren’t they like investing into companies which the companies use to do business, which then is supposed to return profits and grow the initially invested capital? Like I mean its not just randomly growing by sitting idle anywhere…
