  • The caste system of hinduism has been long used to sanctify oppresion, hindu nationalism (hindutva) is a potent force promoting authoritarianism and distruth (indus valley civ was def. not vedic nor did they have flight).

Buddhism has been used as an imperial religion less easily, but chinese dynasties have done it. In india, ashoka the great (or the terrible) probably used it as a cynical PR campaign after his empire recoiled at his brutality. In the province he most brutalised, the version of the stele that talks about his terrible deeds and his conversion leaves out the conversion and just reminds reader of his brutality.

Daoism is a bit different because it has an explicitly anarchist strain that’s harder to co-opt by the powerful. Bits of Laozi are directed at rulers, and i think we can assume that the laissez-faire style it promotes must have lead to some issues as it has in other times and places. Also though: grifters. I love daoism, especially the Zhuangzi, possibly the best book ever, but a lot of sources give me the impression that a lot of daoist priests were just going town to town grifting immortality elixirs and the like.

Also, meekness and non-violence, as much as i love them, fundementally serve the interest of brutal states in excersizing legitimate violence.

  • When people don’t like the present, they almost always assume the past was better. When people are broadly happy with the way things are, they argue the past was worse.

Our take on the past almost always says more about our take on the present rather than anything true about the past.

Nobody was there to police you for words or anything else you did.

On cue, i’d like to correct you on this.

After my fellow goth friend alvin was seen wearing a skirt on the weekend, our high school paid a christian youth group to lecture our entire grade. Their leader said they used to believe they were real actual vampires, but when his friend came home wearing a skirt, that’s when he knew they’d gone too far and turned to jesus.

The satanic panic was also still going strong - i played d&d in the 90s.

People have always been trying to police others for some bullshit. It’s easier online, but we got it done plenty before that.

  • I feel like a lot of people are misinterpretting your comment because of the way republicans frequently use “clintonzes are evilzes!” as a distraction from their own much greater problems.

I’d think the order wouldn’t come from clinton himself - gotta keep plausible deniability.

But i definitely agree with you - it’s unsurprising that the FBI under clinton declined to investigate child pornography allegations against a child sex trafficker who has strong links to clinton.

  • One time after a rough night with my partner’s mental health issues flaring up, i barely slept and was too tired to be distracted at work.

If i wanted to do something it just happened, i just did it. And kept doing it. Until it was done.

It felt like having a superpower, but i don’t think i want to recommend emotional stress as a dopamine trick.

  • Yep! It’s called primary endosymbosis and it’s one of the coolest things around! (I think.) The endpoint of a process where two parts of symbiotic relationship morph into an organ in an organism.

The first case of primary endosymbosis resulted in the mitochondria and thus all multicellar life. That’s pretty cool.

Another time created the chloroplast and thus all plantlife. Again, yay for primary endosymbiosis!

A few years ago scientists discovered that it happened really recently, resulting in an organism with a “nitroplast” for in house nitrogen fixing. So in the far distant future there could be an entirely novel branch of life, potentially as different from what we know as redwoods are from cats.
