As a US citizen I’m nervous to do international tourism as well after hearing so many people get detained at the border. It’s crazy.

You think this wasn’t part of the plan? Crash the economy, then use the bad economy as a rationale to impose deep austerity and privatization.

Plus, it’s easier to commit atrocities against your citizens when the free world can’t see. Wealthy Russians and Saudis will still visit.

If are thinking about coming to the U.S. this summer for vacation, please do not. Things are bad here. Worse than the news is letting on, even. PLEASE don’t come here. Things are only going to get worse this summer.

As the other commenter said, it depends on where you are. But I would say, overall yes. Nobody really wants to talk about how bad it is/shaping up to be. The people preparing for serious defensive action are all dark, and everybody else is somewhere between denial, anger, or depression.

There are a lot of spinning plates in the air, and they seem to be all falling down at around the same time. A small example of this is the 20,000 new ICE agents that the administration has order to be quickly hired. Back during the campaign, they had Trump loyalists at his rallies sign up to “work for the Nation”. That’s almost certainly the pool that they will be hiring undertrained, and armed Trump lackeys from. That means within the next 2.5 months, Proud Boys, Boogooloo Boys, Patriot Prayer, Patriot Front, J6 insurrectionists, and many other actual Nazis will have badges, guns, and a mandate from the federal government to round up immigrants, dissenters, disabled, and anybody else they deem to be “undesirable”. And that’s just ONE of the plates spinning in the air.

With ICE already acting like nazis as it is, that sounds very scary. Something I heard is that people may already be self-censoring themselves for fear pf the consequences - not just at the high levels but also normal citizens

Might be something else too. Many people are so sick of hearing about certain people that they’ve set up filters to avoid any news about them. So what better way to get past that than to just keep the references generic enough to get the views through such blocks but still be accurate.

i’d say it’s both: why would you risk being detained at the border, potentially be subject to general abuse when you’re in the country because you’re “foreign”, detained in the country for… who the fuck knows, AND because america first means your tourism money supports a country actively bullying your home country

No way the vast majority of humans even know about people being detained at the border. I’ll say that confidently because it’s pretty obvious the amount of humans I interact with on a daily basis. Don’t know shit about shit about shit about shit. Now we got some of them, insisting Proven science like polio vaccines don’t actually work and are making you out to be the asshole if you get a vaccine and go out in public.

I don’t actually think that any human on this planet is any better than that. I would be willing to bet that most human beings know way more about someone like Tiger King or whoever was the latest Netflix special then they do about Politics or anything going on in the world. And this level of bullshit continues because there’s no end to people insisting that it’s perfectly OK to not pay any attention and then they turnaround and insist those same exact people need to go out and vote. The people that don’t know shit the people that don’t pay attention the that don’t fucking know anything are all voting And they think that it’s their damn duty to know nothing and vote.

And if you think any fucking person in any country is any different, you’re gonna be really shocked when you find out how shit we all are. 30% of the world will support fascism. Done. 30% of humans are fucked From the jump. That’s the reality we’re dealing with 30% the vein that continues through all of history. 30% of Humanity are shit. 30% of us are going to drag the rest to hell.

the news in australia is pretty straight up about it… honestly we get about as much trump news as australian politics, and since they detained an aussie everyone has been very wary. i can only assume the same is true for the rest of the world (i watch some UK news media and it seems similar in tone)

i think you’re underestimating the mood outside the US… everyone is aware… not everyone is boycotting (because that’s too hard i guess) but very few people are actively making plans to visit. why would you?

both for self preservation reasons (people are doing this), and for just “fuck you” reasons: never underestimate humanity’s desire to knock the “top dog” down a few pegs especially if it’s for “my tribe” reasons

I think people would visit even if we were fascist. The thing keeping everyone away is the significantly greater than zero chance that you and your family might get picked up by ICE and questioned under duress for several days simply for trying to visit Disney World.

Well, that’s a key part of the fascism. Obviously Europeans vacationing at the House of Mouse didn’t care what the social services were like in the USA, or how affordable homes were, or what Disney employees had unions. But a country like the USA that follows no moral code is not a safe place to be in, period.

Trump is enacting his isolationist worldview through his trade war, and using secret police effort to terrorize and abduct non-citizens. This is going to isolate and ward off foreign business and visitors. No surprise there.

This is going to isolate and ward off foreign business and visitors.

Also having tariff policies that just change every 5 minutes makes it rather hard to plan ahead, and businesses hate that. A lot of the companies that we work with have changed their policies so that the shipping fees to the US are either huge, or have restrictions on them such as at least €200 worth of product have to be spent before they’ll ship anything. Meanwhile they’ll ship to Indonesia for free for a product that cost €40.

This is because the time between shipping the product and the product being received in the US global trade policy might have changed six times. The only way to plan for that is to have a huge profit margin to absorb the weirdness.

Yeah, we’ll see. It’s basically expecting the rest of the West to act differently. Maybe they’ll surprise me. However, it’s not like I don’t have perfect examples right off the top my head like France and Roman Polanski for instance. Kinda makes me think that people are shit no matter where they’re at, and they’re gonna visit if they feel like visiting here. If the marketing is good enough, the fascism won’t matter and I would be willing to bet on it.

No, I don’t think that Europeans are somehow better humans than any other human on the planet. We’re all shit and we’re gonna prove that correct.

florida, was a favorite destination for canadian snowbirds, but the state is sinking into the ocean, plus desantis wouldnt do anything about hurricane related infastructure/insurance. and then theres the overwhelming amount of invasive species that florida has, and many people base thier “Exotic pets operation there” for a reason. if florida dint have climate that resembles central and south america subtropica/tropical climate, it will be another run of the mill texas, lousiania or alabama.

Foreigners have no obligation to come to the US. Them not coming and not spending cash here is another crack in the dam that can help lead to the flood.

Organizers have no obligation to hold events with an international audience in the US. Them spending that cash in a foreign land deprives the US of revenue and likewise is another crack in the dam.

Besides, this regime in DC is actively attacking science as a whole to force their false narratives onto the public.

I think a boycott is a pretty effective way to protest and they are in a unique position where doing so is noticed by some.

Let’s fucking go! Keep it up everyone, make people here really see and feel the consequences.

I’m under no illusion that anyone who voted for this will “feel bad” or regret their vote. As we have been seeing the people who voted for this do not regret their decision perse. However, the hate that fuels them will only take them so far. If things get bad enough quick enough they might be able to remember it the next time (if there ever is one). I think the cult following of Trump and their emotional sunk cost fallacy won’t let them see that voting for Trump was a bad idea, but there is a small chance they will recognize and reject it in whoever comes next.

I’m under no illusion the above will actually happen, I just think it’s the best that can be hoped for.

I work with some of those “haters”. They will never blame Trump. Even when their wallets are getting hurt, they will just blame Democrats and the world.

One haters I work with worship Trump and she is an Asian. How ironic

As much as I agree with don’t go there, the Olympics were in Russia and Brazil not too long ago and the World Cup in Qatar and Russia. If those places were fine (which, from the looks of them, they werent) then the US is still ok to handle them for now.

I don’t merely mean for punitive measures, I worry about ICE enforcement against athletes and fans.

Since clearly greed is paramount why deliver the funds and leverage to shake down foreigners? It’s sadly not like they’re beyond common mob tactics.

those things should not have happened there (qatar in particular had the whole thing of bribery and corruption that afaik had big fallout for FIFA). the fact that they did doesn’t mean that this is okay

the LGBTQ community takes every possible opportunity to make themselves mainstream

taking money from corps so they can pink wash and then erasing queer culture from our events because they might lose sponsors because it’s “not family friendly” has basically been the story of every queer event

inviting people that have some name recognition is just an extension of that - they get to pink wash themselves and we get to “appear more centerist”

i’d say some of our LGBTQ community respect ourselves and what we stand for… some of us honestly just want to fit in - which is fine until that means punching down on those of us who want to be who we are because not all of queer culture is family friendly… some of it is about who we love, some of it is about who we fuck, some of it is about kink and fetish and expressing SEXUALITY; not just romance

          sorry; tangent

The next American Olympics is in 2028, in Los Angeles. HitlerPig should be out of office by then, but if he suspends elections, or does some other wild maneuver to remain in office, most countries in the world will boycott them, and we’ll have an Olympics with mostly just Russia, China, and America.

You’re right, I don’t know what I was thinking. The 2028 Olympics will be happening at the peak of the 2028 Presidential election, which will probably be crazy, especially if HitlerPig is trying to run again.

He’s going to want a big, beautiful Olympics, and he’ll be pissed that it will be ruined by European and other countries boycotting it. American athletes, visitors, and viewers should boycott it, too.

Good. I hope thousands of landlords can’t afford their extra homes and are forced to sell, driving down housing prices.

Last time housing prices crashed in the USA, people’s incomes crashed as well or their mortgage obtaining ability did. All it meant was that the already rich and corporations were able to buy up real estate cheap. Did not remotely help 90% of the population.

All it meant was that the already rich and corporations were able to buy up real estate cheap.

Something like half of all real estate is owned by private equity.

If you genuinely care about wealth consolidation among the ultra-rich, and you seriously want to do something about it, there’s a Little Red Book with some helpful advice.

But just propping up Boomer real estate values for another ten years isn’t an answer either. It’s a losing game to pretend you can outwit Blackrock on home ownership.

I live in a major tourist city, and the word around town is that there will be a steep decline from foreign visitors, but many are still coming anyway, because they’ve had their vacations booked for months, and it’s too late to change.

But if this keeps up, next summer will be a bloodbath.

What a shit situation that they have Americans hoping their own country fails.

I absolutely do not hope for a depression. You will NEVER see small business again. You will NEVER own a house. Our future will be utterly gone.

What we need is what can’t be said.

It’s like finding out your dog has rabies. You don’t really want to watch your friend suffer and you certainly don’t want it to watch it inflict this horror on anyone else.

I absolutely do not hope for a depression. You will NEVER see small business again. You will NEVER own a house. Our future will be utterly gone.

Would forestalling a plunge in GDP prevent that? It seems like our finance sector controls everything - lock, stock, and barrel. The only way out is for this system of suffocating domination to end. And that’s going to mean abandoning a fixation on (often fictitious) capital growth at all costs.

That doesn’t mean people will simply stop doing business with one another. It doesn’t mean personal homes done for.

It does mean that - on paper - GDP is going to fall, as all that hot air comes out of a FIRE sector inflated to the moon.

But it also means abolishing a ton of personal debts, ridding ourselves of bullshit jobs, and reorganizing our economic administration towards value creation rather than labor extraction

During a depression many people will die and the ones affected the most will be those that are already struggling under the current system. A depression will likely result in the currently rich becoming exponentially more wealthy, as they’ll have the resources to weather the depression
