Everyone’s talking about how to do this without crying. Cut the roots. Wash the knife. The real way to prevent tears is to not become emotionally attached to the onion before cutting.

But tbh, sharpen your knives. It really helps a lot, because the cells are cut instead of being crushed, which greatly reduces the release of whatever make your eyes tear up.
Usually if onions are making you cry it’s because your knife is too dull!

A sharp knife helps, but there’s only so much you can do.
Well, you can also use it to slice properly instead of chopping.
While that could make it worse, a sharp knife won’t avoid it completely.

You can use it anytime you want.
Make sure you don’t cut the root, that’s where the sadness lives.
You have to cut the whole onion in half through the root to dice.
That not usually an issue though, just the one clean cut and then the exposed root is against the surface while cutting
The only thing I have ever found to work is cutting them while submerging them in water. Which is way more effort for so little gain that I don’t even bother.

cut off the root first. that’s where the highest concentration of the stinging stuff is. i’ve never had an issue since i started doing that.

Some people say to hold a spoon in your mouth but it’s really not needed. Just breathe heavily through your mouth while you cut. 90% of the time this is enough.
I always also wondered if wearing ordinary glasses would work. Goggles obviously would be that just seems over the top
Regular glasses do not help.
Regular glasses makes things worse as now I’ve put down my glasses to wipe my eyes and have lost my glasses while holding a knife help help oh wait there they are
Sounds like me with jalapeños. Drip of sweat falls on glasses, I take them off, then I cannonball butt thwamp the nearest large carnivore.
I’m wondering how many of you have worked on a line. I did for a few years and never saw anyone bothered by it, at least not so much that couldn’t be hidden with sweat.
