Would it be ethical to intentionally post crazy right-wing conspiracy theories in order to encourage redditors left-of-center to leave the site? - eviltoast

Like Accelerationism, but in social media. If we do that, what remains of reddit will be the worst of the worse racists and nazis. Therefore, reddit will have the same reputation as twitter, and thus, no one would want to advertise on there anymore.

I mean, you can’t just say “spez is a nazi” because the neoliberals would just say you are “over-reacting”.

So how about we just go all the way and make the place too toxic even for neoliberals?

Think of this like 5d chess, and recruitment for Lemmy.

Isn’t that how The_Donald and flat earth conspiracy theories started? As just a very funny joke that was then co-opted…?

Yes absolutely. “Ironic” communities were visited by people who didn’t know they were ironic and took it as sincere. Too many people acquire their political opinions through shitposts “for the luls” and now we have conservatives cheering about how much of a “troll” Trump is when they should be concerned that our most important institutions are being dismantled to “own the libs”. No one takes anything serious anymore and I don’t think the solution to that is more absurdity.

That’s how a lot of shitty communities started.

GamersRiseUp was a parody community until actual racists joined and weren’t in on the joke. Then the joke got lost.

All this would do is just fuel the actual right wing nut jobs.

I think that’ll just be fuel for the audience Reddit wants to keep.

It’s unethical, I suppose you could do it, but imo the same amount of time would be better spent making Lemmy better in some way, posting more about stuff you like or if you are using Reddit helping people migrate (I would but I can’t go back on my pledge to myself never to contribute to Reddit ever again).

You say this like you just invented trolling, but reddit is already filled with similar content

I’m gonna be really blunt here in the hopes that you take it in the spirit it’s intended rather than an attack.

But it isn’t important if it’s ethical, because it’s stupid. It’s a pointless endeavour and if you aren’t better than that, you should try to be.
