@Reannlegge
Canada isn’t better than USA.
I get where you’re coming from on the rest of it, there’s still plenty of systemic racism and stuff but we are at least marginally better than the USA. Our federal government at least acknowledges their existence instead of ignoring Indigenous groups, and Trudeau’s government made several steps towards correcting the harms the country committed with the residential school system, including reparations, and did several things towards overall recognition of First Nations’ traditions including a federal stat holiday.

Rentlar@lemmy.cato Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do gamers actually like the look of gaming computers and accessories?12·2 days agoI kinda like RGB but not in the pulsating rainbow way how it seems to always be on marketing materials.
I like keeping it to one colour, with the intensity at half. It is nice to change it a few times a year for a fresh look.
The fonts and other stuff, I don’t care that much as long as the components are good quality. Maybe subconsciously I would consider design if I had to choose between options that performed and cost relatively equally.
The US government flaunting its effective tyrannical control of its tech companies are, somewhat ironically, helping the EU get away from that control by being encouraged to swap to Linux and FOSS.
Rentlar@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Things Are Bad in the U.S. and in Gaza. But You Have More Power Than You Might Realize8·2 days agoI watched it, there’s no mention of donating to anyone in this video and no donation link in the description aside from her standard Patreon and social media info.
No, she is saying your power is in pressuring MPs and other politicians to push back against C-2, push back on Carney being an American suck-up, supporting sanctions on Israel, boycotting products and services that support the genocide and Trump’s deportation scheme, push companies to drop Gardaworld for their involvement in constructing the concentration camp, and on. The point is that all this bad doesn’t take away what options we have as individuals to resist it.
If you could please refrain from spreading misinformation based on unfounded hunches, I would appreciate it.

But the points I raised are related to despair of the Reconciliation bill passing and those climate setbacks.
Democrats’ window of opportunity to change ahead of midterms is NOW until the primaries. (I’ve said my spiel about it before in this thread)

Rentlar@lemmy.catoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•Today we remember what is worth celebrating about the USA4·2 days agoFor general strike US to become a viable thing, I think Trump, Musk or another R-nutjob has to come out and say how silly that idea is. Then with some publicized backlash to that, people will sign up to do it en masse, possibly with a few mayors or governors’ support.
Debunking PirateSoftware’s misconceptions (being charitable) is what spurred on the gaming sphere’s mass attention to it.
Rentlar@lemmy.cato politics @lemmy.world•Sanders Says Every Republican Who Backed Trump-GOP Budget 'Must Pay a Price at the Ballot Box'21·2 days agoThat’s where the resistance has to last 16 to 40 months, slowing down and making people aware enough of these things:
- how unserious about budgets Republicans are
- how much they are trying to punish regular people (poor middle and moderately wealthy class),
- while also looking to use the they are spending to subsidize companies, multi-millionaires and billionaires.
Rentlar@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•We don’t know what happens to the waste we recycle, and that’s a problem6·2 days agoBecause waste and recycling is a provincial matter (like many things)… saying Canada doesn’t have a standardized federal framework is fine, but kind of a shallow take considering this article didn’t bring up any provincial examples at all.
BC is on the ball with recycling, reporting and auditing composition.report
Ontario is trying to standardize their system and it puts cost and collection responsibilities on producers supposedly, but it could lead to lower recovery rates.
Alberta or Saskatchewan probably don’t care that much, or will support it to the extent it helps oil and resource companies.
Ah shit, I woulda totally had you over in Vancouver, if I wasn’t away on a trip myself around when you arrive. Maybe after Aug 5th I could, if you haven’t moved to another city.

hostels in Canada are generally fine, not luxury but social. Vancouver’s Chinatown is cheap, downtown and well connected. However the downside with the cheap area there is the street can smell and there are plenty of homeless people, minding their own business. Otherwise you’ll be on the outskirts.

if you’re getting to know people my age, instagram is pretty popular (i dont have it)

people are generally nice all over Canada, hospitality will vary by area and person. Go to nightclubs Fri and Sat mostly if you’re into that. Social spots are cafes bars and beaches.

Rentlar@lemmy.cato politics @lemmy.world•GOP lawmaker caught dumping Medicaid provider stock before megabill vote25·3 days agoHe got many non-budgetary provisions out from the Byrd rule, which is essentially enforcing the rules that allow the thin Republican majority to pass a budget.
But the Republican Senate also made up an accounting magic trick to pretend that a several trillion dollar budget line item has no effect on the deficit. And pretended that this is now a rule because 51 senators think this is a good idea.
Senate Democrats did virtually everything within the legislative process that they could on their own.
House Leader Jeffries did at least delay the vote for 8 hours, 44 minutes to talk about the bill, and bring it to the afternoon news cycle instead of at 4am.
