Trump turns on Time after new cover shows Musk sitting behind his Resolute desk - eviltoast

Summary

Donald Trump mocked Time magazine after its latest cover depicted Elon Musk sitting behind the Resolute Desk, questioning if the magazine was “still in business.”

While pretending indifference, the cover likely irritated him, as he was ecstatic just months ago when Time named him 2024 Person of the Year.

Speaking at the White House, Trump tried to dismiss the cover’s implications and praised Musk for uncovering “fraud and corruption.”

Despite his criticism, Trump has long craved Time’s approval, even displaying a fake cover of himself.

The exact same scenario played out with Steve Bannon, and Trump fired him. I’m don’t see Elon faring much better.

Musk and some more background people likely saved the Trump campaign from financial ruin. He couldn’t be rid of them if he wanted to.

He could shift his soft power approaches against Musk. That is, if Trump’s understanding of soft power were better than Cersi Lannister.

However, Trump doesn’t generally seem to care about how much someone has helped him in the past if one minor slight shows up. If Musk can’t help him at this very instance, he’d be open to throwing him under the bus. He abandons people fast

Musk and his friends understand soft power better than Trump does. That is, understand it at all. They have more options if that happens.

His campaign is over. He is president now. And he can do whatever he wants… and has been doing exactly that.

My sister speculated that somebody (probably trump…) uploaded something far worse than “the pee-pee tape” to twitter and musk inherited that when he bought the site.

But even that only goes so long and… trump has SCOTUS backing to send seal team six after whoever he wants.

On your last point, I’m surprised that Musk isn’t more visibly worried about assassination attempts. He’s really not making friends with anyone in government or otherwise, and the one guy backing him is a bad mood away from testing his full immunity powers and seizing several billions for himself. Like, if I had that kind of fuck off money, I sure wouldn’t be putting my neck on the line for this.

Yep. If Musk or at least one or more of his DogeBags doesn’t end up with some extra holes or thrown out of window within the next four years, I’d be surprised, for all the reasons you say.

I’m sure most of the Deep State leans hard right, and I bet most federal workers probably tend to be all over the map, despite what idiots like Steve Bannon say. I’m sure some of the hard right types think it’s hilarious to see fElon fucking with liberals to “own them” by destroying various departments that the more idiotic and clueless right doesn’t care very much about [1].

But he and “bigballs” or whatever the fuck his incel DogeBags call themselves are doing much, much more than just “owning the libs” and I’m sure it’s pissing off people that have some real dangerous skills and tools and will not forget easily…fElon and his boiz are the types that are completely unable to read the room, thinking that everyone is cheering them on, when they are just smiling, and sharpening their knives, and waiting for the right moment to strike, and not necessarily figuratively…

[1] Like USAID - dipsticks like fElon probably had no clue it’s about soft power. I bet there are people within the Deep State that know this and are seething mad about it, and are actually far right. fElon might have stepped on a rake w/o realizing it right from the jump, by picking something he thought was going to have no real defenders on the right (because it’s about white people giving black people money or whatever, in their minds).

That’s why I kind of agree with “the dumbest thing (some troll has) ever heard speculated”. musk clearly has enough dirt that it has kept his head attached after all the “president musk” memes.

Thing is, fElon may be fucking with things that end up having the hard right come after him, and someone or several people that don’t know about, or really care, if something personal about donvict is released.

He already has the racist wing pissed at him over the H1B thing - as usual, it’s not about any sort of populism; they don’t really care that much about American workers getting fucked, or the indentured servant aspect, or how this is just there to further enrich the already obscenely wealthy, they are more focused on having foreigners on our shores, and they don’t like it at all.

Musk is willing to hold his nose about having non-whites here if it will make him more money and he can abuse American workers AND foreign workers at the same time - bonus!

But yeah, other than just having a shit-ton of money, he seems to be doing nothing to really forge any lasting alliances…

He’s rich so far, but he really seems to be alienating his consumer customer base. If he keeps this up, his car company could crash as fast as it grew, and maybe his other customers will start reacting

He owns stock currently worth a ridiculous amount. It’s worth so much that tanking Twitter was no big deal, and of course buying a government position is cheap.

But that stock is tied to the value off a small number of companies, especially Tesla. If people stopped buying their products because of that ceo, that’s going to take a couple hundred billion off the top. Yes, that does seem to be happening in Europe. Meanwhile Chinese companies are eating their lunch in most of the world and the us is apparently going back to some smog filled dark medieval time

It’s unfortunate that their cars and other products are still compelling, still have features unmatched by any competitors

And of course there’s spacex, and other companies, not yet impacted.

I am just SO glad that I never bought one of his cars.

Kimbal Musk’s sale of approximately $27 million in company shares also comes as Tesla is set to have its worst week since the U.S. presidential election, in part due to what Bloomberg classed as “shockingly bad” sales reports from Europe — which could indicate Musk’s political activities in the U.S. are hurting the EV’s profitability, according to a Friday report. Tesla sales in Germany plummeted to their lowest figure in four years last month, while sales in France and the United Kingdom also declined.

I totally agree with your take other than that their cars are anything special at this point - what features are unmatched by competitors? Yes they were innovative at the time but they currently don’t lead in efficiency, range, charging, ride quality, interior quality, and FSD was/is an absolute grift.

I do think they still have leads or near the top in most of those. For example, Lucid has outstanding technology and top efficiency but only sell a small number of expensive cars. There is no intermediate priced models similar to Model Y.

Tesla Supercharger network is a game changer, but that benefit will start to erode as other manufacturers come on board over the next couple years

Most EV still need to go through dealers, and it’s hard to think of any reason that’s a positive. Most EVs still have the traditional pricing model of “buyer beware”, hidden fees, surcharges, incentives. Yes, it’s an advantage to buy direct from the manufacturer and pay exactly the listed price: no more, no less

While other companies are finally starting to dabble with software updates, I don’t think any other company has it nailed like Tesla.

Then there’s gadgets, and the app. Sorry but I’m a gadget guy. The sheer number of options from the app, things I can control, are unmatched. Things I can see and control through Home Assistsnt or display on my home dashboard are unmatched. I don’t know if any other car can match sentry mode, much less the dozens of fun gadgets like theater mode, goods mode, etc

I recently found out there are some EVs that don’t even have a heat pump yet. What the heck, that makes a huge difference in winter driving range
