& I’m doing pretty good! The wefwef app has done a great job of recreating the Apollo experience and has made it a lot easier to not want to go and download the Reddit app. The more active it gets here, the easier it’ll be. How are you guys doing so far? Have you found an App for Lemmy that you prefer the most yet?
Still trying to find my footings. The thing I miss most is active engagement. The comment sections sometimes feel so empty. But I will give it time. All in all, I find the experience better than I anticipated. Using wefwef on my phone and the instance-site on my desktop and laptop. I am sure a decent app will be developed in time.
I felt that at first but I’ve found the engagement to be more meaningful here when it does happen, even though it’s sometimes sparse or not at all. I came in the previous influx after spez started forcing subs open. I don’t really miss it that much now.
I was pretty much a strict lurker on Reddit, so the smaller community here is certainly a bit of a change for me. Only thing for me to do is to change my habits with it, and start actually joining in and adding to the conversations.
Howdy!
In recognition of your contribution to the community, I present you with the coveted Lemmy Lemon award.
🍋
Please let’s make the Lemmy Lemon award an unofficially official thing. After reading that I want people to use it more
Let’s make it a wheel of cheese. Gotta keep the french happy or they riot 😅
Bruh💀
Bah! Let them have cake. 🍰
I like this idea! Take your Lemmy Lemon. 🍋
🍋
Your enthusiasm for this idea earns you a Lemmy Lemon 🍋 friendo, I like it too
As a former reddit lurker, I like the more low-key engagement here. It feels more welcoming.
You have summed up my feelings exactly.
Greetings, fellow lurker! The torch has been passed. It is our turns to carry it until the communities grow larger and we can recede back to the shadows
Glad you are here!
Gosh I sure love it here. Everybody is so kind & nice. This is such a better feeling place. I enjoy conversing with everyone so far. Reading these comment sections just makes me feel calm too 🥰
I’ve been here 20 some days now and I still feel this way. Great community on this instance. I mod 4 communities and have yet to take a moderator action against a comment or post. It’s a nice little chill slice of internet.
Thank you! I’m glad to be here!
Agree the big thread here are pretty comparable, but are still missing a lot of small subreddit/thread.
One thing I certainly don’t miss from Reddit is the top voted comment is always some lame pun or some tired phrase that has been repeated a thousand times before.
Absolutely 100% this! Opening the comments to find endless walls of repeated bad puns is something I’ll never miss.
I also didn’t even bother engaging on Reddit at all, but doing so on Lemmy feels way more worth it for some reason
I’ve had a genuine thank you from another user, days after I had posted a response here.
I could post on reddit that the sky was blue in response and somehow get turned into a hatemonger that oppressed a flightless subspecies of microwave ovens.
I joined towards the beginning of June and have no intention of going back to reddit. The only exception was to delete everything I had posted there.
I used to save stuff to my own sub reddit, not sure if it’s all long gone now. Did you manage to copy before deleting?

I used power delete suite and made a copy of everything I wanted as it ran.
I must try that - thanks for the info

I’ve only been here for like a day, but I’ve noticed that too. There’s fewer conversations, but what there is is very worthwhile. I haven’t opened a post to see five people trying to get their joke in first, which could sometimes get a bit annoying haha
I honestly feel like there is more engagement here. Most Reddit threads were like telling into the wind. By the time you got there it was almost always too late to contribute
Another thing to consider is that Lemmy is basically early access. Very rough around the edges and one of those ways is federation. Users from other instances might not see your comment, or might not see it immediately. The good news is, it will only get better and more active.
I’ve found myself actually reading articles since I can’t go in and just read someone else’s synopsis of the content, which frankly is a good thing. I can get my own information and form my own opinions, Reddit just let me be lazy but it’s a nice change.
As for engagement, just be the change your wish to see, and engagement will follow. I think there is still some fine tuning to be done in terms of the sorting algorithms as well, which would ideally get day old content out and active but fresh content in. A lot of dust left to settle with the great migration underway.
Yeah I feel you about the active engagement. I personally try to fill in the silence as much as I can by commenting on things I’m even slightly interested in, just to keep the engagement up. Hopefully others do the same.
Remember to be commenting on stuff that don’t have comments to drive engagement! It’s important for all of us to do our part
I’m doing my part!
Oooh, first time seeing images/gifs in posts. This looks really nice on PC. Is that just a direct imgur link or something?
It looks like it was uploaded directly to this instance. You get a nonstandard markdown link that embeds the media in the post/comment body. You can even paste image data from your clipboard and it’ll be uploaded and embedded.
Oh it’s not externally hosted? Interesting.
edit: oh shit, you’re right. Damn that’s new then?! Amazing.
Did I hear a rock and stone?
It reminds me of Reddit a decade ago when most posts in the specialized subs didn’t have much interaction either. But the interaction was deeper and more meaningful and did not consist of everybody trying to crank out witty one-liners to whatever topic.
The other thing I try to consider: What was okay maybe a couple of years ago now feels weirdly “empty” because our brains have been Pavloved into having a deluge of dopamine-inducing content washing over us all the time…
I was a somewhat massive lurker on reddit, I didn’t bother engaging much because I knew 60% of the time the reply would be snippy, even if my post wouldn’t be remotely combative. So over the years I just stopped bothering mostly.
My inbox has kicked off more here in the last week than probably the last 365 days on reddit. It’s really wholesome, for lack of a better term.
All it takes if you commenting, to fire off more comments just like now. It’s good shit!
I sort by new mostly and if I find something interesting I write a comment trying to startup some conversations. The more people do this, the faster the community will grow.
There is definitely a lower quantity of posts and many of those posts don’t get tons of comments, but the posts and the comments they do get are of a much higher quality.
Comments are emptier, but I feel like they’re more relevant. To comment is an actual response and discussion, not just the same joke with the expected replies on every thread.
Even i was a lurker on reddit. But here, I’m contributing more actively.
“Be the change you want see in the world” applies quite well here.
Also for app, I’ve been using memmy and it’s pretty good.
The bigger communities are reaching a kind of critical mass but getting there for the niche ones, particularly for those with no overarching direction to move to Lemmy, will be slow.
I feel like over time Lemmy as a platform will manage to make it easier to link decentralized communities together (fingers crossed). Until then it’s slow and steady.
Try to remember that a lot of engagement on reddit nowadays is bots. Even if they seem like humans. How Lemmy is now is how reddit felt back in 2008.
I hadn’t heard about wefwef until your comment.
Really excellent web app thanks for mentioning it!
I also miss more interactions in communities and comments sections, but this is just the beginning of Lemmy. It will take a while for this to become pretty active, but I’m sure it will create an awesome and loyal community.
Just testing out connect for android now, first comment. Seems slick so far. Feels like RIF a bit
Hey friend let’s talk more about this.
I’m very happy this space is flourishing. Lots of organic conversation and increased engagement. My only hope is that this revolt against corporate social media will be sustained. I would love to see this turn in to an existential threat to the companies selling our data and privacy to the highest-bidding advertiser.
Hello fell Reddit Refugees! Yeah I’ve been a near daily reddit user on Sync for Reddit (Sync Pro) since 2014 or so. Now leading up to the API shutdown I was using reddit about once a week and you already know I had to use Sync one last time on the final day, but
I’ve mostly been using Lemmy for about two weeks now. I’ve tried a lot of apps (Jeroba, Thunder, Liftoff), but ultimately I also ended up on wefwef. It’s seems to be the one of snappier ones so far. It’s super strange because since it is themed after Apollo, it looks like I have an iPhone app on my Android! I know that when Sync for Lemmy comes out (about six weeks I think) I’ll jump ship immediately, but for now I’m really liking wefwef.
I’ve made it my mission to lurk less on Lemmy then I did on Reddit so I can try and help the platform succeed with some small amounts of content that I can contribute. Recently I’ve been very interested in AI image generation, so I made a community centered around that. I also made a community centered around video game giveaways to hopefully share more wholesome content on the platform. Overall, I’m hoping that since Lemmy is so new that all of us can take some control in steering it in an overall better direction than Reddit. I’m personally on team No Karma, since I think it makes Lemmy a lot less toxic and a lot less about having something to brag about and more about being something to be proud of.
Good luck to everyone who’s a recovering Reddit addict with their quests to become Fediverse addicts!
Edit: Wefwef accidentally posted my comment 3 times saying it failed to post. So I guess there’s still some kinks to work out!
Mlem and Memmy are quite tolerable

It is quite sad and yet at the same time also an exciting time. I was on Reddit for 9 years and it has kind of become the internet for me.
I myself was 99% only a passive user, so I have contributed nothing to the value of the site. But the site itself had a lot to offer for me.
But I also realized that Reddit, the platform itself, hardly provides anything relevant.
I probably would never have used Reddit much without a 3rd party app, I also use it exclusively on mobile.
For me, the value of the site comes exclusively from the content, i.e. the community. And fortunately, that’s something Reddit has no direct control over.
I realize, of course, that not everyone will be here now in 6 months instead of on Reddit, but it doesnt matter.
I think the majority of users are like me rather passive, but more important are the active users of the community.
It is much more important to have these pillars of the community on board, as they will sooner or later ensure that something new is created that will then attract the larger number of passive users.
And I think it’s this usergroup that has angered Reddit for the most part. These are power users who probably all use 3rd party apps.
Nevertheless, many will of course stay, if you have put a lot of work and heart and soul into building up your community/subreddit for years, letting go is of course much harder than for someone like me.
Yep 10 years of rif for me. I found towards the end it was getting pretty stagnant. Its exciting to see something new growing in real time. All aboard the fediverse express.
Not only something new, but also something that everyone in the community is excited about and have a vested interest in.
I knew I had an issue with the amount of time I spent on Reddit.
But good lord the repeated opening of Reddit Sync to no avail over the past days really driven home just how much I just defaulted to Reddit in any dead time.
I’m loving the fediverse. I have to thank Reddit to make me discovering it!
Is Lemmy.World a bit laggy for everyone else?
I wonder is it on my end or is it because of the new traffic it’s getting?
It’ll be nice if more and more migrate over.
There’s something amusing about opening up what’s almost a Reddit clone a day after and seeing content and subs that would have been exactly like it was on Reddit here instead.
As long as momentum continues, we may see more and more leaving Reddit for what’s nearly the same thing with a lot less BS.
I just hope Lemmy servers and infrastructure can handle the growing popularity, especially once there’s popular native clients that switch from Reddit to it.
Would be very happy if spez ends up having killed his own platform in future retrospection though.
Yeah Lemmy seems the way forward. It just sucks for all the subs that won’t be making it here anytime soon. Niche subs I’m following for example, I’ll still have to rely on Reddit.
There’s definitely a period of transition. I didn’t expect to completely jump ship since I replied so heavily on reddit for community information and general news. However Lemmy does look really promising.
It does actually. I’m creating a community for one of the subreddits I was a part of, hopefully more people will join and fully migrate from Reddit.
It’s heroes like you that make it all possible. Not everyone has the time or ability to moderate a new community, but it’s great that those that do take initiative to do so. Once the community exists at all, it’s much easier for others to start posting, which gets the ball rolling. There isn’t any silver on this site to give but here, have a Lemmy Lemon 🍋
When Lemmy gives you a Lemon, you make lemonade 🍋
I was forced to take a serious look at the number of subs I was following for drama’s sake before opening my own sub because I don’t want to be at it 24/7
Can‘t you just open them yourself?
I opened a couple sure but the problem is getting the traffic on here. I can’t just make a post on the subreddit because it gets removed immediately by the mods.
I desperately miss RIF, and I have a community I care about on Reddit that I mod.
But I’m going to see if I can rebuild it here. I think Reddit has basically committed suicide.
Honestly, I’m pretty excited about being a “pioneer” (sorry to those who have been here for longer). I never commented much on Reddit, but plan to contribute more here.
So far Jerboa has been the best one for me, I tried wefwef but wasn’t a big fan (and couldn’t work out how to uncensor NSFW content across the board, very annoying haha).
But Boost is coming out at some point! I’m really looking forward to it!! <3
So far I’m doing okay, just tough with how slow everything runs and all the network errors and stuff, but it’s early days so I’m patient :-)
95% of posts that contain active discussion and more than 3 comments are about Lemmy and/or Reddit implosion. I would love to see a pivot to more engagement in other subjects. I do enjoy reading about lemmy and participating in the discussion, but would be good to see the users disperse a little bit :)
