I’m thinking about spinning up my own Lemmy server. I want to tinker with the bits. There’s some shit going on under the hood that’s hush hush, and I want to poke at it.
I’ve got a domain. I’ve sure got the gear, but my home internet doesn’t allow me to personally host. I work for an MSP. I was gonna run some stuff for free there, but I’m not so sure about that now. I’ll make the old man an offer and see if I can get it cheap, but with a real contract. I’d consider other hosting, but I really hate the big clouds. Still figuring out where I’ll run …
The fediverse comms are all in a tizzy about lemm.ee shutting down. I don’t see any help there. I’ve found this:
https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/install_docker.html
(And also the Ansible and From Scratch options.)
There’s a lot of options for install. Anybody got any pointers or preferences?
Hey jonhtash.
I got my server up. Sorting my way through Nextcloud.
The task of the moment is email. And I’m probably going to try Mail-in-a-Box.If you’ve got any self-hosting email pointers, I’ll certainly listen. I’m not new to it, but I’ve only played this game on an enterprise scale.
I asked about it in the emaildiscussions community. https://eviltoast.org/post/15907022
If it’s for personal use, you could probably set up a small cloud vm at hetzner or wherever and just use it to reverse proxy back to the server in your house through a vpn.
Actually installing/setting it up isn’t too bad though. There’s a few matrix channels if you run into issues, but it seems like the ansible route is pretty popular. It at least has a few configs in the repo you can use as a reference when needed.
Essentially it is:
- postgres
- pictrs
- lemmy api
- lemmy-ui
- nginx / caddy / etc
I think you can get away with not having pictrs, but I don’t remember offhand. If you do set up pictrs, I’d recommend turning off the option in lemmy that proxies all images through your local pictrs instance. It’ll eat up disk space really fast if it’s on.
Ok, yes the Ansible route seems well regarded. Ansible has always seemed like a sledgehammer for killing flies to me, but I guess its time I learned. It’s not like I’m a fan of Docker either. And the ‘scratch’ install just screams “please blow up halfway through”. Ok, Ansible.
Thx for the disable pictrs recommendation.
Ya I’m gonna run cheap. I did NOT want to pay for this, but I want it easy to cut ties w/work.
I want a full POP. VPN endpoint. RDP gateway. Website. Lemmy. Nextcloud. Email. PBX?
Tunnel to my homelab subnet. - Workstation. Proxmox and guests. HyperV and guests. Lyrion music server. Storage.
Ya, my boss don’t have IPs to dole out. I’m gonna try hetzner.
