We’re DECSystem10, though sinza is a convenient singular entity that we tend to use I as. We are a plural collective!

I enjoy retrocomputing and find that NetBSD is awesome! In general I prefer BSD to Linux actually.

I enjoy getting old computers to talk to each other, as well as alternatives to the web where possible like Gopher, Gemini, and Spartan!

Yeah, iirc it was a former NetBSD developer who made Void.

Alpine still honestly feels more BSDish in some ways than Void to me. Probably has to do with Alpine’s install scripts being similar to OpenBSD’s.

I’ll be honest, I’ve learned the hard way that there really isn’t any 1:1 BSD experience on Linux. Some may have similar packaging systems, but the base system depends on packages on Linux-based OSes. A shame because my favorite thing about BSDs is that packages are optional.

That being said, I do think the most BSD-like experience with the Linux kernel is going to be Chimera Linux, which was, funnily enough, created by a former Void developer.

  • The policy doesn’t seem to be a full ban on AI within the distribution’s infrastructure, permitting some usage such as for translation and for research.

For anything else, this would be a mild annoyance to me.

For a Linux distribution, not fully banning AI is a dealbreaker for me due to the direction that the Linux kernel is going. Thus the resistance that a Linux distribution does against AI must be stronger for me to consider it, especially when there are other Unix-like OSes that have less AI-generated code due to not using the Linux kernel.

This line of thinking also helps me narrow down Linux distributions to recommend.

  • Regrettably, I don’t think there’s a good middle ground distribution that’s anti-AI. It’s either very technical distributions like Chimera and Gentoo or opinionated distributions geared towards newcomers like elementary OS or more specialized distributions like Nura (formerly postmarketOS) that are explicitly anti-AI.

I think your best bet would be to go with elementary OS, honestly. It uses its own DE, Pantheon, rather than KDE, but I think it’s easily your least worst option. I’ve never used it extensively myself, however.

Of course, I also am obligated to mention that the Linux kernel is extremely pro-AI. However, an anti-AI Linux distribution is leagues better than using, say, Windows when it comes to AI.

That being said, here’s a list of distributions known to be affected by AI as well as those that are anti-AI.

  • I’ll admit that it’s stuff I’ve seen more on Tumblr (where, for the past decade, there is somehow a “debate” on what can cause plurality) and I hear it’s also a thing on TikTok.

In all fairness, collectively we don’t consider ourselves trans beyond a political solidarity sense, though that’s because our body is also intersex than anything to do with our plurality, we consider ourselves collectively ultergender. Though the experiences section doesn’t have our experience, which is “our visibly intersex body is fine the way it is, and we refuse to binarize it”.

That being said, some of us do consider themself trans, a few of us consider themself cis, and some of us consider themselves ultergender or ipsogender.

  • Oh, there’s even a word for this phenomenon because of how strongly it parallels with transmeds: sysmeds!

As a plural collective that was heavily traumatized by a cisgender transmed (probably better known as a transphobe), sysmeds really feel the same way to us.

Funny thing is, internalized sysmedicalism is also why it took us years to realize we were plural! This is in spite of two of us having argued about how the body will be presented as, and in spite of us being quite interested in plurality. We don’t really relate to a lot of trans egg stuff, but we do relate to that feeling in regards to our plurality.
