Various brands of caffeinated drinks recalled by Canadian Food Inspection Agency - eviltoast

Affects only certain drinks (Logan Paul’s PRIME and others) for misrepresenting the amount of caffeine contained in the drink.

The BBC has an article about it too.

Canada limits caffeine content in beverages to 180 mg per serving. Prime and Celsius have 200 mg, this seems to be a relatively common amount for new drinks that are popping up in states. Prime, at least, is also not released in Canada yet, so any version out there is the stronger version.

I was surprised when I discovered the Canadian limits, in the states many drinks are 240 mg and some even 300 (always marketed as super extreme hardcore).

Doesn’t Starbucks 16 oz cold brew contain about 200 mg of caffeine? Don’t we have venti cold brews here? Maybe it’s grocery-specific regulation, idk.

This love for high dosage caffeine sounds like macho silliness to me. This “news” works probably more like an ad for these brands than anything else…

Could be. 200mg of caffeine would kill me. But for people who drink 10 cups of coffee per day, 200mg might give them the desired effect.

Yep. These brands know what they’re doing.

Looks like they just didn’t have the correct french and english labels for their caffeine content. It should be fixed, but it’s not a big problem.

True; that is also part of the issue. The site lists the issue as:

“The affected products are being recalled from the marketplace due to various non-compliances related to caffeine content and labelling requirements.”

      Could be both?

      (Edit, double post?)

Could be both, but more likely just the labeling issue. They probably just don’t have the amount of caffeine listed on them. It’s probably not intentionally misrepresenting the amount of caffeine. More likely, they just weren’t aware of the local laws when they decided to sell their products here. After all, they’re all listed as not having bilingual packaging.

Related: When I was in Myrtle Beach in may, I had the pleasure of having Gatorade’s new energy drink: Fast Twitch. It was delicious and I hope we get an 180mg caffeine version in Canada. Give me all the caffeine!!!
