The Soviets were completely cool with it to. The Iran-Iraq war was one of the few where the Soviets and U.S were in agreement. Plus both had decent relations by this point. - eviltoast

    How often do you get to get a close look at your biggest adversary fighting a battle at close range, and just observe how things play out

        The “Iranian navy” was two frigates vs a carrier with destroyer escorts and three missile frigates. It was like spectating a fight between a starving toddler and a rabid mastiff.

        Like, yeah, the mastiff won. Any mastiff would win. Its pedigree was irrelevant, even if it was impressive.
