First Apple Watch - eviltoast

Want to buy an Apple Watch for the first time but having a hard time deciding. Having heard the rumors about the Series X, I’m wondering whether it’d be a good idea to settle with an SE 2 or a Series 8 for a lower price for the time being and get the Series X when it comes out, or just buy the Series 9 and have that be my watch for however long it lasts.

I like the upgrades of the Series 9, but is spending the extra $300 (converted) for it really worth?

Thanks for your opinions in advance!

I had the SE for 2 years, now I have upgraded to series 9. Wanted the AOD and the qwerty keyboard.

Comparing the series 8 and 9, there’s not much difference except for on device siri and tap gesture, which I think are not major changes. If you’re planning to use the watch for long then go with the series 9 for extended updates. Changing apple watch every year is not recommended as per my experience.

For years I thought “I will wait for next year, maybe there is something really crazy coming” but this year with the Series 9 I finally pulled the trigger and honestly I should have done it years ago. It motivates me so much to be more active, I put more attention towards my sleep quality, I discovered Fitness Plus for me, etc. Even if the Series X is going to be some ground breaking re-invention of the Apple Watch, it will be the first generation of whatever that would be and you can get a more refined version of it a couple of years down the line.

If you think you will benefit from an Apple Watch, I would pull the trigger now. If it is an SE, Series 8 or Series 9 depends on what you want to spend and what features you want, but I wouldn’t make it dependent on whatever the Series X might be.

I had to return my three year old S6 (loaner for a heart research study) and replaced it with an SE gen2. It’s perfect for me, I’m glad I didn’t pay twice as much for an S9 or even more for the ultra.

I would go for an S8 on sale if you’re really interested in what an S10 may offer. Even if you find the S10 not as groundbreaking as unsubstantiated speculation and rumors, you will still get years of use from the S8. And if the S10 is some major leap, you can sell and buy that. Or use the S8 for an extra few years as the “major leap” will still be there.
