It should be stressed how not-normal this is. Don’t let the media tell you it’s okay just because some people will be very happy. Maduro is a dictator that has murdered entire families. It’s understandable. However, you can’t kidnap the leader of another state because you don’t like them. If so, it would be just as justifiable to kidnap Trump or Putin. This doesn’t make the world safe and the best case scenario is that they install a leader that allows the US to rape Venezuela for it’s resources while personally enriching Trump. The worse is civil war.

At this point, I wouldn’t mind if Mexico disappeared Trump and the chain of command.

Trump is a threat to Americans who oppose him, it is very likely that he will attempt to murder people like AOC, Mamdani, and Mark Kelly in the years to come. Venezuelans, Californians, New Yorkers, there is no difference to him. So long as people defy his will or has something he can steal, he will assault them.

      APnews.com, first sub-headline:

FACT FOCUS: Trump repeats false claims as he discusses US raid to extract Venezuela’s president

Calling bullshit up front and center is pretty bold for the AP and that says something.

Why put “kidnap” in quotes, it’s not as if it’s a wild claim?

It certainly wasn’t lawful in Venezuela, where I believe the kidnapping occurred.

What? Kidnapping doesn’t only happen to kids, adults can be kidnapped as well. Also if you are dead set on calling it something else it would just be abducted, like she’s a whole person not just a wife.

yes, “abducted” is surely a better word choice but my comment was a reply to the title. so i used the same word and put it in quotation marks.

Now… why did they abduct a “whole other person” who is Nicolás Maduro’s wife?

You really think he EVER got on a boat, with a pregnant woman in labor, or a newly delivered mom, and then went and disposed of the baby?

He was there to fuck underage girls, not play with the consequences. I’m not saying Epstein couldn’t have ordered such done, but think about this, why would Trump have been there? Taking time off the golf course so he could watch a baby get dumped? Just not very plausible given what we know of him.

Let’s pretend for a minute that Maduro’s abduction was actually justified by anything that was given as a reason (spoiler: it’s not). How would that affect his wife still? Being married to a criminal and benefiting from their crimes without participation isn’t illegal.

Its long been illegal to benefit from your spouses crimes.

Calling a dictator’s spouse uninvolved ignores how authoritarian power works. When crimes are public and systemic, knowingly benefiting from the ruler’s wealth and privilege while offering loyalty or silence helps sustain the system, and the law already recognizes this by treating knowing benefit and facilitation as culpable even without direct action.

Ps> re: maduro’s capture. in history only three things have hiatorically stopped a dictator:1 self destruction, 2 people rising up or 3 another country.

I wouldn’t want to sully a beautiful guillotine with his viscera, just fucking shoot him in the back of the head and toss his corpse into the nearest hole to be devoured by insects.

Actually, on second thought, forget the hole, we don’t want to sully our beautiful insects with his viscera, just incinerate the corpse and toss the carbon ash into the nearest toxic waste dump.

We’re not even a full year into this lunatic’s reign.

And I’m not sure how to feel about it. They stormed in, took the president and fucked off. Presumably they’ll install the other candidate, who will let the newly formed Trump Oil have their pick of it.

And still, I’d take that over what they normally do, which is invade, terrorise the whole country for a decade or two, murder and torture a load of civilians, and then do all the other stuff anyway. I’m not sure how many times they can do this to regimes they don’t like. I’d assume that all the other tin pot dictators are on the phone right now ordering a lot of very thick underground bunkers, and enough tins of beans to last 20 years.

    We live in interesting times…

Yeah, the US invasion of Venezuela is setting precedence and signal to China’s annexation of Taiwan and dampens the illegality of Russian invasion of Ukraine. It’s a successful move on Trump and creates a “rally around the flag” effect on voters and distract them from Epstein files.

Worse, we kidnapped a head of state and his wife. As to the law enforcement thing, it means the DOJ collaborated on trumping up charges to make it sound legit.

Also, framing it this way makes it sound like US police were involved, which will legitimize this with a great many Americans.

I find it rather ironic that trump is attacking Venezuela since he was the one who suggested a peace treaty/deal with Russia and Ukraine.

For someone who is so optimistic about preventing war that they were making deals to prevent it, you would think he would do the same with Venezuela.

“Damn, you made it seem like you can talk out any war from happening, but I guess not with Venezuela” 😂

I haven’t followed the news about this strike against venezuela, so be mindful of that, I just had to make this point…

A rogue state with the most powerful military. The next world war is going to primarily be everyone vs the barbaric Americans. I could see it ending up like The Man in the High Castle. A nation fractured into Christofascist and liberated regions. That’s if the rest of the world can even muster and offensive.

The axis (Russia, China, USA) isn’t really an axis that it’s made out to be. That’s mainly US state propaganda that is pushing the whataboutism to diminish the severity of their evilness. Russia is a non-factor now that it’s blown its military load on Ukraine. China doesn’t actually care about world domination. They care more about economic strength. Maybe they take Taiwan. It’s a small island. US state propaganda will make it seem like a whole continent. Whataboutism. There’s only one nation on this planet since World War II that was waged continuous conflict throughout the world. Every region. One might even say the world has been under constant American threat since 1945. A slow burning, never-ending war. They feed us their media soft-power to keep us sedated.

I don’t even know how they’re still in business. I bought a cheap safety razor and a hundred pack of blades literally a decade ago now, and at the time still had a couple multiblade razor packs around. I haven’t bought a razor in a decade. I’m maybe 2/5 of the way through my blade pack, and I think I’m finally on the last heads on the two multi-blade razors (because those only get used for my balls).

the safety razor is just so much better for shaving your face

That makes me remember I think it was an ancient SNL bit about exactly that, a new gillette razor with 5 blades and a sixth phantom blade that comes close to touching the skin but doesn’t quite. And then like three years later there were the 5 blade gillettes with the sixth edging blade on the back. The SNL skit called it. I think about that more than I probably ought to.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States carried out a lightning military strike on Venezuela early Saturday, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and spiriting them out of the country. President Donald Trump said the U.S. is “going to run” Venezuela until a transition of power can occur and the U.S. will tap the country’s vast oil reserves as part of a rebuilding effort.
