My latest big hobby has been Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), basically medieval sword fighting. It’s a great workout for mind and body and is filled with nerds into swords and the history of it haha

Also big into swing dancing, ultimate frisbee, and board/video gaming

I like riding my bike a lot and camping. Just did a ride down the Oregon coast this last summer and it was a total blast

Self hosting and software of course, but that’s probably pretty common on here

You should! Its a ton of fun, plently of places to play online. Unfortunetly in person play seems to still be recovering post-COVID in a lot of places, so it can be tough to play in person.

RC cars. I was into local club racing in the 90s, dropped out of it when my kids were born, now I’m getting back into it.

The technology improvements in power, battery capacity, and radios have been frankly astonishing. Setups that would have cost $1000+ back in the 90s come as ready-to-run kits for $200 now, and perform better.

I really enjoy making ice cream. It’s fun coming up with a concept and trying to translate it into ice cream. My favorite idea so far was turning a black diamond ski run into a flavor: swirled herb blackberry and vanilla ice creams with broken pretzel sticks and crushed oreos. I call it Yard Sale.

I also enjoy trying to make classic flavors into non-dairy because dairy ultimately isn’t sustainable but ice cream should be sustainable.

I like restoring antique radios. Mainly just the electronics, but I’d like to learn how to restore the exteriors as well. It’s nice to work on something tangible after working on a computer all day

Oh no… I always feel guilty when I think of the list of hobbies I tried and half-heartedly try to keep up with.
The ones I consistently get back to are reading, writing, singing (to myself), gaming, drawing, coloring (yes I like to color in coloring pages :) and generating AI Images.
Other than that, I have a 3d printer for which I try to create 3d models when I have the time and energy. I still need to teach myself Blender some day but whenever I open up the software, I immediately give up :)

Yes! Your knowledge will last and it’s insane how many hobbies have coinciding skills. Keeping it fresh allows me to stay motivated and as long as I’m doing something, I couldn’t care less if it’s painting or soldering or whateverthefuckelse at that moment :D

Exactly! 3d printing has been the glue for a lot of my hobbies. Ill find that tos and stuff i buy for one thing will eventually make a different hobby i have easier to get into. It helps me swallow the “ADHD Tax” on hobby jumping lol.

Same experience with my printer! Gave me some motivation to finish off some of the projects I’ve disregarded since there’s some new shiny light to it. The printer has been going non-stop (while it’s not needing to be maintained) and I’ve made enclosures, costumes, frames, and molds that got me back into programming, crafting, painting, and masonry. Glad to have such split attention sometimes, lol.

That’s a very positive way of putting it, I like that.
It is a lot of fun to start something new. Every time I’m full of naive optimism that this is going to by my forever hobby, the one I’m going to be doing until I’m an old lady. It’s nice to dream :)

I like acquiring enough competence in a craft to be able to cover the basics, and collect useful tools. That way, if ever I’d benefit from being able to do something, I can do it with minimal speed bumps.

For example, welding a broken chair, 3d printing a weird-shaped bracket, stitching a pair of pants, etc. As long as I can do something well enough to work, or at least show an expert what I want, I’m satisfied

Your approach is very practical, it’s nice that you can set clear expectations for yourself.

I guess my hobby collection is more about trying different ways to express myself. I have this urge to create something, something that came from me and my imagination. But it never matches up to my expectations and I get disheartened. So I switch to a different hobby and try over.
I should learn to be happy with small results, but it’s hard for some reason.

I tend to try lots of things for a while and see what sticks but top ones would be board gaming, Rubik’s cube, electronic repair and sewing.

I am currently considering horology but haven’t really done anything about it yet.

Outside of gaming, I play softball regularly. Run multiple teams and sub when I can during the season.

Probably going to pick up electric guitar soon too. Been dying to learn just haven’t had time.

I learn Japanese. Love the language.

I also Selfhost my services and work on my servers. Programming too. But that stuff is also kind of my profession.
