Nextcloud on Hetzner - eviltoast

I’ve been trying to do nextcloud for a couple months. Like many folks, I dove in, found I needed to run from a domain to do it right, considered a couple hacks, and finally just tabled the idea.

Well, I do have a domain, I’ve just leased a Hertzner server, and I’m still struggling. I guess most of my issues have been in learning their systems, but I’ve completely deleted it twice, wiped it several times, and have just now achieved a working ssl protected website … that I cant login to.

Gonna be at least one more reinstall before I get this right. Wish me luck …

Hrmm. Fixed some install stuff. Still no auth. I didn’t install to a sub-domain. Could that be it … ? Try again.

Got it running. I think my next step is getting a mailserver going. I’m looking at mail-in-a-box.

There are quite a few plugins for Nextcloud. What ones are people using?

So yes, it did surprise me to see that the package doesn’t provide an email server.

Unless I misunderstand, you have to provide your own office product platform too? I see a package that tries to be google-app-like, but it is based on Collabara. It looks like you could do openoffice instead.

I see this thing too. “Built-in CODE server”. Hrmm…

I patched the OS, upgraded Nextcloud, installed Nextcloud Office and Built-in CODE Server.
I had issues with the WOPI IP. I couldn’t make it understand localhost, finally had to give it the actual IP.

Well, it works… I can make and manipulate several kinds of documents. I have storage and sorting options.

I haven’t got email going yet, but I’m gonna self-host, so that’s another round of discovery.

The file browser interface. Took me a while to figure out how to make a new document, pictured here.

The word doc editor interface. Yup. That’s a text editor.

I looked at the powerpoint clone. It sux, just like PP. What more could you ask?

I gotta say, the diagram editor felt janky. Poor response times. It likely needs more resources than my hetzner gives it. But more than that … I do a lot of lousy graphic hacking. I did not like something about the layout of this app. Something bothered me.

After writing that, I had to go look again. I figured out what I hated so much. There’s a significant lag in the cursor response time, such that you have to wait over an object for a fraction of a second in order for the cursor to turn into a grabber or text or whatever needed. Once I noticed the lag, I was able to move just ahead of it, so it was always updating, and watched it spike my server’s CPU. (So yes, I’m not giving it enough resources.)

Well, here it is, my new least favorite graphic editor … Although I’ll probably learn to like it. See, my fav is MS Paint. Very low expectations …

The spreadsheet thing … save me from more freakin spreadsheets, would ya? Whatever. It looks like Excel enough to make you want to puke. Seems fine.

    It’s kinda hitting me now.
I did it. I unfuked myself from google.
    Well, I’ll be freakin damned.
