This is an amount that would cover university tuition for all American students for a year.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•18 speed cameras just went up in Oakland, California. The cameras will ticket drivers that exceed the speed limit by 11 miles an hour or more.English
4·4 days agoYou’re right about civil infrastructure, it’s a shitshow of road layout in some parts of Oakland.
However, they’ll print money with these cameras the way people drive.
What’s really interesting is that between Oakland and Berkeley, there are so many cyclists risking their lives every day

61·6 days agoExactly. Many were historians and Christians.
They already had the previous example of the sale of indulgences within the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. Even American colonial revolutionaries were offered pardons by King George III to stop fighting.
Commenter below cites the fact that the expectation was that the congress would step in if popular sentiment was outraged by this sort of thing, but this state of affairs was foreseeable.
They ended up with a powerful executive even though they believed previous kings had too much power. e.g. “His Excellency” George Washington refused the title of King.
Also of note is that there were relatively few voters and they were privileged and generally well educated and informed members of the public. White men with land.
Do you think it’s possible for these same users to use the “M365” version of the Office apps?
And de jure

5·9 days agoWhat’s up with cashiers in coffee shops not listening when they ask for my order?
I wait for them to ask, I announce it loudly and clearly. They interrupt. I confirm. I go on to item two. They confirm. I confirm.
Then, they apologise and try to guess item one again. They get it wrong. I correct them. They’ve got it.
Oh yeah, what was item two? Yes, that’s right.
Also, what’s the deal with not waiting even for a split second between me saying “flat white” and “with two sugars”?
I understand that coffee shops are loud and hectic, and I might have to repeat myself once in a while, but damn Melbourne, every time?

Programming@programming.dev•Code Is Cheap Now. Software Isn’t
2·10 days agoThe bespoke short-lived solutions angle is an interesting one, to be sure.
I wonder how many orgs will back themselves into a corner thinking their product will be short lived but it ends up hanging out for a while, as you mentioned.
Honestly this feels like an extension of this Agile/Scrum madness we’ve been dealing with since the mid-2000’s. Instead of the next quarter, we’re only building things with a view of the next two weeks.
Now it’s measured in hours, and even then we can give a prompt to an LLM and have a half working thing to throw away after it converts that PDF to a CSV.
I worry about the craftsmanship leaving this field. Engineers used to push back and for good reason.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was the most singular sight on Earth that you saw in your life? Some place that is difficult to imagine that exists and that couldn't be replicate by humans that easy
4·10 days agoDeep in the outback, there are more stars than you can imagine. The soil is so red.
Driving along the highway, seeing a single pair of headlights on the horizon for twenty minutes, combined with the dust and bug reflections in your headlights, and the sheer remoteness of it all, does things with your mind.

News@lemmy.world•ICE Agent Who Killed Mother of Three Revealed as Iraq War Veteran With Immigrant Filipina Wife
131·12 days agoThis thread is full of people imagining that he committed war crimes in Iraq, but it’s also very likely that he once had discipline, the threat of consequences, formal training in weapons, use of force, the rules of engagement, and the concept of restraint.
It’s far likelier IMO that when he joined law enforcement, and particularly ICE, he felt that he could be less restrained.

3·15 days agoAnytime this happens, they should vacate any conviction of property destruction/rioting/disorderly conduct and related charges. Why? Same reason as the 4th Amendment “fruit of the poisoned tree” doctrine.
And every law enforcement response to protest should be publicly examined via subpoena in this way.
