Okay, I’ll take the bait. The company who hires you is also taking all the risks. Broken machine? The boss has to pay. Sick employee? In my country you still get paid.

Have a shitty month with very little profit? People still want to get paid. Need to invest in better machines, tools, buildings? Guess what, you’re now committed to making that money back.

An employee makes a very expensive mistake? Guess who’s going to pay for that.

All in all, at least in my situation I can say my boss carries a significant risk for personal finance ruin. He puts his money on the line, and gets to collect the rewards.

I get to go home when it’s time. He pays me a very reasonable salary, takes care of his employees and I get payed every month. Doesn’t matter if it is a good month or 3 customers went bankrupt and left him with a 200000 dollar bill unpaid.

I am not complaining. If I want, I can quit and start my own company. That is, if I have the skills to:

    • Know everything there is to know in a specific field
    • Have the skills to work with clients
    • Have enough insight to know what to charge customers
    • Have the skills to work with suppliers and work out deals
    • Have the skills to put a long term plan together for the future of the company and keep track of that, while also keeping back up options in mind
    • Still be able to relax a bit so I don’t go into a burnout
    • Lots more

Some people here act like communism is everything. It’s not and it will not work.

The company I work at, has a lot of skilled people working there. I believe 30% may be able to make a living om their own if they really struggle. The rest cannot do that without working together with others to get work, or get work done. They are skilled in specific things that help the company as a whole, but on it’s own are not enough to survive.

The government is not capable of organizing things like companies do. We’re seeing massive amounts of money wasted each year in my country and it’s not a third world country. I do not believe goverment owned companies will make the world better, it will just be more expensive.

And people will still find ways to enrich themselves while others work for that money. It is human nature.

  • Guns are not legal in a lot of countries. Knives are dangerous, and useless against guns.

I understand why you would want to defend yourself against robbers, but let’s be real here. The person who is robbing you is generally somebody who has more experience fighting than you. So the chance that they can take the knife away from you is real. They are already up in adraline and know precisily what they are doing. They have their weapons in their hand already.

You on the other hand are surprised, because they most likely got the drop on you with their weapon in hand.

You, have to find your weapon fast enough, and then, be calm enough to aim and fire correctly or stab the guy. Without getting stabbed or shot yourself.

If you’re militairy trained or a cop, you may be able to do that, but a well trained cop will probably just try to talk his way out of it instead because they moment you bring deadly force to the table, someone will probably die and that better be justified. A tv or PlayStation? Not worth the mess, impact on yourself and the possible conviction for murder.

Of course guns stores or knive stores will be happy to sell you a “self-defence” gun or knife. Knives have a very short range and will generally end with one person dieing om the street and one in the hospital. And guns require a pretty intense and regular training if you want to use it while under pressure.

In America you might be able to get that kind of training, but in most countries shooting is a hobby and you’re not able to get that kind of training. You’re also not allowed to have your guns out for grabs because they are not allowed for self defence.

Bottom line: it’s not worth it. If you have no other choice, fight for your life. If you can, just hand over what you can an replace it later. But if you try to be a hero, you’ll most likely regret it.

  • You know what it is? You can’t control all that crap anyway.

The news is trying to get your attention all the time by making things as sensational as possible, feeding hate and fear and dividing people. After a while it becomes too much.

So I just chill and focus on what I can do. What can I change, here and now in my environment? That will have an immediate effect on me. That is important.

I will not sacrifice my sanity because rich people only know how to make money by feeding them negativity and trapping them into algoritms.

I can watch the news, or walk my dog. I’ll walk my dog, makes two beings happy. I can watch the news or ask my wife how her day was and have a nice conversation.

I can watch the news, or pickup the trash that the wind blew thought my street. I know which one will make me feel better when I’m done.

There’s a million things to do, and none of them require getting wound up over things you have no control over.

So good job on this one and have a nice day.

  • You wrongly assume the victims of scammers are aware something is off. The people that fall for it do not realise something is off. So naturally they go into crisis mode and try to solve the problem. They may have a weird feeling that something is off, but if they fell for it, the urge to solve the problem was bigger.

The scammers are going for the low hanging fruit. They create urgency and panic and if somebody is not responding to that they’ll likely move on.

So the key to fighting scammers is in learning people to control their first reaction to someone “panic” calling them. The moment they feel pressured to do something, the alarm bells should start to ring. And family members should make it very clear everyone is allowed to hang up.

Look up the correct number, call back. Being rude is allowed. Just look up the phone number in your own phonebook, call back and if you feel guilty about hanging up, apologize for dropping your phone and “accidentally” hanging up.

  • I have to admire the plan. It does seem good to update you code base to a safer language.

I don’t’t know why they want to slow themselves down by using AI though. It seems they have no clue on how much work is to be done and how important it is to do it right.

Also, lines of code != productivity.

It’s an entirely wrong benchmark to aim for.

All in all it sounds like they just want to be fancy and they are going to half ass it. And when it fails, they’ll be out a lot of money and they will have to fix it anyways …

The idea is nice, I can already smell the execution will be complex, slow and cost way more then it should, just like everything Microsoft does these days.

  • For me, personally, putting an animal down is an act of mercy. And I don’t do it if I don’t need to. I’m not having a great year this year, since I’ve had to put 3 animals down, but it was necessary everytime.

First was a dog. We treated her for infections in het joints. She could not stand up anymore, so we had to. Unfortunately the medication caused lots of issues. Then blood pooled up in one of her arteries and her organs shut down. Nothing we could do to save her, so we gave her a quick death instead of a slow one.

Second was a cat. She was old. Had a bug tumor in her belly and the vet told us the chance she would survive surgery was small. She was in pain, so what are we to do? Again, give her a quick death and stop the pain.

Third was a dog again. He puked and did not eat anymore. Turned out his spleen burst and he was bleeding internally. He was old, would not survive surgery. He was going to die from the internal bleeding, so again, we just choose the quick and painless death for him.

The common theme here? I don’t put an animal down if I don’t have to.

Of course, these were all pretty clear cut cases, but the first dog, we literally spent thousands on vet costs to help her with her joint problem. I will always try to help my animals the best I can. If I can get a reasonable quality of life for them I will arrange it. However, if it is not sustainable anymore, then I will not let them suffer. But it hurts me every time I have to make that decision.

I will not put down an animal because it is a certain age or something silly like that. The vets here also won’t put down a perfectly healthy animal unless it’s dangerous and ordered by court. If the vet thinks they can treat the animal and it will still have a good life, they are not ready to kill it yet. Which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

Well, if nobody contributes and nobody wants to work even to sustain themselves we’ll be back to prehistoric times in no time.

You’re allowed to live. But you’ll always have to do some form of work to sustain yourself. Whether that be hunting animals, farming, or working a day job, not having to put in any work is usually only for rich people. So you’ll have to at least contribute enough so it’s worth it to keep you around. Carry your own weight.

The rich got lucky. They navigate society in a different way. Either they got money through family, or because they worked hard and earned it.

That’s not 98% of humanity though.

So earning a living is perfectly fine for me. Being taken advantage of is not, but overall my job is fair for the workload.

But you’re not entitled to anything. Just like the rabbits in the wood will have to work for their food, the wolves have to work, the cow must eat his grass and move to a new field once the field is empty. You’re alive, that is given to you. The rest you’ll have to work for.

  • I don’t believe it is worth it. You’re much better off keeping your data off the Internet in the first place.

The problem is, if you employ a service like that:

    • It is a cost that returns every month.

    • What happens with your data? You have to give your data to the company so they know what to remove. Can you imagine what happens if they are hacked? Would they even tell their customers? Or just keep quite? They have everything you don’t want the Internet to know in one location, not only for you, but a lot of users. It’s a target, for sure.

For me, it’s not worth it. I keep minimal info out in public. I don’t have social media. If I Google myself, I find nothing. So why would I pay for a service that I don’t need?

Can you even see what data a service like that removes? And how often?

Now, if you know your data is on the Internet and it’s being used you may consider it. But it’s probably to late already. The people using your data already have it, and may sell it to their scamming buddies too. There’s not much a company can do about that.

  • Right. Consoles can’t be sold at a loss and stores never sell things at a loss at a sale because they make it back with other products that are sold at the same time…

It is very possible that if not enough people buy the subscription they will be at a loss.

However, I understand it from a business standpoint.

Cars are usually good quality now. They will probably last 15 years or more. Which means manufacturers are their own competition now. Not to mention that China is making some pretty cheap and impressive cars too.

So how does a brand keep existing? Extracting more value out of the customers they have. And hope that this minor thing isn’t enough to make them buy a different car. Or hope other brands do the same thing so it doesn’t matter.

I think on expensive brand cars, the buyers usually can afford a subscription. Odds are they also have a strong preference for a brand so they are not very likely to switch.

So for a Mercedes, Audi, Bentley, BMW etc I understand why they think they can get away with it.

I just hate it with a passion and will never ever go with it unless I literally don’t have a choice. My car, I paid for it. Want me to pay extra to build an extra option? Fine, but it is a one time fee of the cost of building that option on the car. If it does not require anything that is a returning cost to the seller, I am not paying a returning fee.

Vote with your wallet and the bullshit will eventually disappear.

  • It really depends on the team. For example, some guy left at work, and others got hired.

The guy that left was social and could be left alone without any issues. A reliable and trustworthy collegue. One other collegue remained, also capable and reliable.

The two next hires: one is slow and incapable. Just simply should not work in this position at all. I often end up having to fix his mess.

The second one: incredibly narcistic. Nothing is every his fault. He always knows better, is always praising himself and showing off what he did. Problem is, he thinks he’s special, but he’s basically beginner level. Making lots of little and bigger mistakes everywhere, but never adresses it or changes how he does things.

Not stupid , but if it does not go his way he claims it is stupid and makes a lot of noise about. If he was capable of adapting, he could be good. Now he cannot be left alone either.

So, the first group, sure I loved to work with them.

The group as it is now? I’d rather work alone. I have to do almost everything myself anyway. The two new ones are just like walking in the mud, only slowing me down and never changing.

So it really, really depends on the group.

  • I don’t follow pro sport at all. Only the formula 1, and only through articles on news sites.

I just don’t care. It’s not affecting my life.

I also find it hard to stay fan of a team, when the players constantly switch to other clubs. If the people are constantly changing, how can a club stand for anything?

This week players are all about how this club is their favourite, next week they get a transfer and suddenly that club is a better fit. …

  • I know this guy, did judo for at least 20 years. Stopped doing that, but kept doing the bodyweight training every other day. Push ups etc.

He’s now 70. I hope I can be as fit and strong as he is by that age. He still does his exercises every other day, and he still works in the garden etc.

So, what I do is even if I don’t go to the gym anymore, I try to do bodyweight stuff every other day or so. Push ups, belly exercises, squats, pull ups on something. Yes, the gym is more intense, but if I can keep this up for the rest of my life the gains will be there.

I also try to be careful about what I eat, and I’m failing hard at that. I do walk a lot though, I have an active job and also a dog.
