The collapse is already in process. So I guess that’s one nice thing - it’s already here, you don’t have to be worried about it beginning. Trump 1 destabilized a lot of things combined with COVID and Trump 2 following a limp Biden admin has finished the job. Pax americana is dead, and the world as we knew it relied on that status quo.
I don’t know what’ll follow, whether in America or abroad, but we’ll all still be here and life will keep going. Don’t let it keep you down. If reading the news keeps getting you down, then stop reading the news for a while. Filter your feeds to show only happy things, or just disengage from social media entirely. Algorithms are designed to drive engagement and anger is proven to be the most reliable form of engagement, so social media is just an anger factory anymore. Disconnecting from it for a while can be good for your mental well-being.
There’s still plenty of joy and hope and happiness to be found in life. Sometimes you might need to turn down the volume on other things to find it, though.

5·13 小時前Yup, or a bit younger. I’m 40, so I was 28 when gamergate kicked off this whole online misogynist grifter ecosystem (which fed into and became a component of what we’d call the alt-right a few years later.)
By that point I’d already had my first few bad breakups and rejections and had grown up, and had made some good platonic friendships with women, so I wasn’t vulnerable to it. But if it’d happened when I was like 23 or 24 and I hadn’t had those chances to grow and mature yet? It might’ve been a lot different.
It’s much easier to blame bad luck and personal failings on others. Growth and maturity takes work.

6·13 小時前It’s really easy to say “go to therapy,” but that ignores the realities of accessing it.
It’s not cheap. There’s long waits involved. It’s very likely your first therapist or even first few therapists won’t be a good fit and you’ll need to shop around. Sometimes you get lucky and you find a good fit on the first try. And sometimes you find a hundred bucks in a gutter, too.
I view “get therapy” as a mid-term goal. It’s something that you should be working on but it’s not something that fixes things right now.

1·13 小時前Well, a consumer giving you $350 for a RAM set is cash in hand. The contracts with hyperscalers are all IOUs until the contracts are actually fulfilled aren’t they? At what point does actual money, not the promise of money, transfer from buyer to seller?

11·13 小時前Aren’t the data center deals only finalized and paid upon actual completion of the project? Like that’s part of what makes the AI thing a bubble - companies are trading IOUs. I pinky swear to buy these chips once I have the data centers to house them in and the data centers have the power, water, etc from local infrastructure needed to operate and you pinky swear you’ll have the actual physical goods available at that time to fulfill that order.
What happens if a large amount of these pinky swears, which inflated stock prices are built on top of, fall through?

3·13 小時前Or you could just make a waifu gacha game that people install freely because, dude: anime tiddies! And it requires kernel level anticheat because you definitely don’t want people getting their waifus and husbandos for free.
I don’t know that any of that is or could be connected to spyware, but it seems like if I wanted to orchestrate some kind of hidden state sponsored spyware network, targeting the gooners that will voluntarily install software on their phones and computers would be a lot simpler than hiding shit in RAM.

6·1 天前The downside is obviously you get zero natural light. And your neighbors might think you’re weird, but they’re roasting while you’re not so fuck em.
You could probably tape the foil to a piece of cardboard cut to size and that would make it easy to remove once the sun isn’t shining straight at your window and put it back before morning. I don’t know if the cardboard would affect it, however.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do your daily meals look like each day?
1·1 天前Breakfast: a couple peanut butter sandwiches or quesadillas (just tortilla and shredded cheese, maybe a little hot sauce.) Sometimes I’ll add an egg to the quesadillas if I have time.
Lunch: none
Dinner: Beans and rice or maybe rice or ramen with some mixed frozen veg and furikake. Or just more peanut butter or coldcut sandwiches.
Being poor and too stressed/tired to give a fuck sucks. Just gotta make it a couple more months and I’ll be able to fix it all. That’s what I keep telling myself anyhow. Gonna try to scrape together some spare change this coming month for a bucket of Orgain or something. Extra protein, fiber, etc.
It’s dumb young puppy love behavior. It’s adorable. No need to be so cynical about it. If these kids were ten years older then yeah I’d call it love bombing.

2·1 天前At ~310 estimated usage you’d probably want at least a 450 to be safe I think.
With only 350 you’d probably need to undervolt or set power limits, which beyond obviously limiting performance (but at least something the Steam Machine suffers from too) isn’t exactly “it just works.”

21·2 天前Building a PC isn’t that bad. $1000 is plenty for a competent 1080p machine, especially with DLSS or FSR or even just Lossless Scaling involved.
If you don’t care about playing the latest and greatest, you can come in around 500 if you can find some decent secondhand deals. 3060’s can be had for around 200 used and they’ll play pretty much anything indie just fine and can probably even handle modern demanding titles with aggressive DLSS and turning features down or off. You can go cheaper with a 2060 super for about 50 less or get a 4060 for about 50 more. Team red will probably be a little cheaper overall, although FSR isn’t quite as good as DLSS at squeezing every last frame out of the chip.
If you’ll only be playing stuff like Stardew, Crosscode, etc - and there’s a ton of great games like that - then you don’t even need a discrete GPU at all.

21·2 天前what they said doesn’t change what the thing is
lmao what
Of course it does. This is a PC being marketed as a PC. Just like with the Steam Deck, Valve was explicit about “it’s a PC too!”
It’s a PC with the convenience of a console. But it’s still a PC, and it has to be measured up to one.
I can definitely say that if a person lives within reasonable distance of a Microcenter, there is zero reason to get a Steam Machine - just get one of their in house powerspec prebuilts. You can take it to the microcenter if you need tech support you can’t handle on your own, you’ll get way more bang for your buck and you can still put SteamOS on it. Obviously most people don’t live near a microcenter and their options for a quality prebuilt are tougher.
But I still have trouble seeing this as being worth it unless you’ll be using it as a PC. You can get a refurbished Xbox Series S for like $325 and it’ll play all the low-demand games just fine and it has Netflix and all your entertainment apps available to use it as a TV machine too.
The Steam Machine’s value proposition exists solely if it’ll also be used as a PC and not just a “steam console,” but that then also brings it up against all PCs. And it’s way, way too expensive there. Not all prebuilts are a Dell.

21·2 天前Right, but in that case you wouldn’t waste a thousand bucks on a Steam machine anyway. You’d get a decent budget CPU and GPU, very likely secondhand, and call it a day for like half that price at most.
It’s very expensive to have a “AAA ready” machine these days but an “indie and retro machine” can be pretty affordable if you’re able to get secondhand parts at a decent price. Like you can get a used 3060 8GB for a little over $200 on eBay here and that’ll easily handle pretty much any indie under the sun.

42·2 天前8GB is plenty for 1080p. Especially since you’re not actually rendering at 1080p. And it’s RDNA4 vs 3, so it’s a more powerful chip in general.
B650 is fine but I didn’t look too closely at the specific mono model. 350W PSU is what stood out to me as a major issue since pcpp lists ~307W power usage. 350 isn’t nearly enough.

And you could have looked up information instead of vomiting nonsense everywhere but instead we’re here.
I just figured that since you’re such an obvious expert on the subject, you’d just know.
