Yes, exactly. You need a stable society to run oil refineries and distribute the gasoline to every community. Portable solar panels may be a trickle of energy, but it’s still something to juice up an EV that only requires sun. Some EV can also power an extension cord, so they’re a mobile back up battery.

6·16 days agoThey give fine grain details on the Chance For Hope Foundation page. There are some pieces of info the charity posts transparently, but they’re missing critical items like any financial statements. The Charity Navigator rating system basically only recommends donating to charities with a perfect 4 star rating.

15·16 days agoThere are many great organizations out there doing awesome work. The website Charity Navigator does a good job rating different organizations for their transparency and how much of their funds are actually spent on their mission. They gave the “charity” mentioned in the article a 2 star rating.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your best tips for looking busy at work, while actually doing something you enjoy?
7·16 days agoIf your profession has a professional society or industry has a trade association, look into webinars, certification classes, or other events they might have to learn more about your field and build skills. They often have opportunities to get involved with the organization as well, which could look good on paper to management when promotion opportunities arise…or new job applications if there are no promotions

8·20 days agoAgree. I think MS and Google selling more cheap “cloud laptops” could totally be a thing. The personal device would mostly be a screen and bare bones components

But then there’s a paradox of only people who are independently wealthy can then afford to be politicians with the security and housing demands they face. If we want more working class people to run for office, they need some help. How about we just ban politicians and their families from owning individual stocks?
Counter point… Progressive reps like AOC and Max Frost are not wealthy and maybe could benefit from better security

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is socialization so hard in the 2020s?
61·1 month agoAgree with many of the other commenters on the multiple causes of loneliness.
I’ve been fortunate to find community at my Unitarian Universalist church. UUs don’t have an expectation to believe any particular scripture, but instead share a common set of values, the first being every one has inherent worth and dignity. My congregation has people who identify as atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, and several types of pagan. So the focus is on being in community and helping each other grow and achieve their goals. I’ve made good friends through the choir and a young adult group that organizes social activities. UU congregations vary based on their membership, and many stream services virtually so you can check them out before going in person. Here’s a link to find a congregation near you.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your favorite classical pieces for background, relaxation, or concentration?
4·1 month agoA lot of classical music most people are exposed to are single movements within a larger composition. Listening to whole symphonies/concertos/suites/etc gives you a consistent vibe for 20-45 mins.
Some I like:
Violin Concerto in E Minor Op 64 - Felix Mendelssohn
Violin Concerto #5 in A Major, K219- Mozart
Symphony #2 in D Major - Jean Sibelius
Cello Suite #1 in G Major - J.S. Bach
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven
Miserei Mei Deus - Gregorio Allegri (has an interesting story)
Live recordings/performances of the Revivalists have this vibe! Their music that makes it to the radio is so sanitized.

Public transit, sports facilities, malls, and other pedestrian-focused places where people congregate in person. Advertising directly helps make public transit and spaces more affordable for everyone and perhaps makes or breaks financial viability at all in some cases. It’s also harder to violate people’s privacy with a physical ad somewhere on display for everyone. But I’d say there is a line on when it’s overdone, especially in professional sports stadiums.
Fuck billboards and anything that makes driving less safe though.
