  • It’s a fine hypothesis to suspect that turf causes more injuries than grass but answering that question by looking at where teams play their home games is the wrong approach. You’ll get a much clearer picture by recording where each injury happened.

One of the big issues with your take is that there are confounding factors such as:

    • Are teams that play home games on turf better adjusted to it?
    • How many division rivals (where a lot of road games are played) have grass vs turf?

  • We definitely will achieve Ferenginar if the EU succeeds at becoming the world government. The thing everyone forgets about the Ferengi is that they don’t have unbridled laissez-faire capitalism. They have one societal government with a vast bureaucracy, with one branch highlighted prominently in the show: the Ferengi Commerce Authority.

The FCA is so powerful within Ferengi society that their best comparison in historical human society is probably the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

  • It’s a nice sentiment but the truth is that education is collapsing in general. We can’t even teach kids to read, write, and do arithmetic anymore, let alone comprehend basic human rights, dignity, consent, and respect for others’ autonomy.

Look what’s happening to the world, with all the radicalism, racism, fascism, and all out assault on the working and middle classes with AI and automation. How are kids going to get any job (never mind college) when they’re multiple years behind grade level on every subject? We’ll be lucky if we can keep these kids out of gangs over the next decade or so!

Am not US but otherwise felt the same, for a long time.

Now recently road conditions have been deteriorating quite badly where I live. With potholes everywhere, sedans and other small cars with delicate suspensions just get damaged all the time by the road. This, along with heavy snow and slush in the winter, has caused me to rethink my stance.

  • Depends on when you read HN. Right now, I see a fierce debate about the evils of AI at the top. On the one hand there are folks defending AI and dreaming of the end of human labour, pointing at Wall-E as a utopia. On the other hand, there are others pointing out that the ultra-rich in the tech industry have openly expressed a desire to build a techno-feudalism with themselves living as kings, while the masses die in unemployed squalor.
