No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How to make myself read my curriculum books?
3·24 hours agoI’m EE major and feel tired to read books too. My solution is reading the book, optionally listening to the book, and taking notes together. I feel that taking notes can force me to understand what I read. When I can’t compose the notes, I ask LLM or read the thing again or Brave/DuckDuckGo it. I use Neovim to takes notes in LaTeX and Piper with Elleo/pied for TTS BTW.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are some good, independent news outlets that are reliable?
1·2 days agoAs a Taiwanese, most of our mass media suck (not those mentioned English ones but Traditional Chinese ones).
Taiwanese mass media and its staff have rather a poor reputation. The general public rated Taiwanese mass media as a whole at 5.58/10 in 2019.[12] Cédric Alviani, Asia-Pacific Bureau Director of Reporters Without Borders, indicated that Taiwanese mass media has suffered from political polarization, sensational reporting, and absolute power of the owners within a media.[14] In a 2022 Reuters Institute survey, Taiwan ranked last among democracies in the Asia-Pacific region on people’s level of trust in media, at a 28% trust rate.[15]

Linux@lemmy.world•Linux was called 'obsolete' in 1992, and now it powers servers around the worldEnglish
471·2 days agoWindows was called obsolete (by me) years ago, and it’s abandoned (by me) since mid 2024.

Technology@lemmy.world•Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening as you go about your day — but Apple may be risking a Meta Glasses-style backlashEnglish
7·4 days agoConsidering the amount of Apple devices in the wild, I guess what I talk physically to people will be mostly recorded then, not to mention that Google assistant or smth like that maybe doing the same, what a Brave New World.
If you mean those ro.product.*, ro.system.*, ro.vendor.*, etc. and some other device identifiers, I think you can adjust many of them when compiling GrapheneOS yourself, which, however, requires a lot of storage and computational resources. If you mean the user agent HTTP header (and navigator object), there’s no such thing as a system wise UA since UA is to recognize the OS and browser combination, and the UA header can be spoofed with those user agent switcher extensions or, if you are advanced user and want fine control, Header Editor, which can be added to Android Firefox by visiting it with desktop enabled.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users
7·14 days agoAurora still works for me for now on Samsung stock OS. I now mostly install Google Play apps with APKPure over Obtainium tho and only use Aurora for those not on APKPure. And most of my apps are from GitHub/GitLab releases and F-Droid. I disabled Google Play and didn’t login to Google account. I don’t want the requirement of a Google account to install an app and Play Integrity to run an app. It is by no means acceptable that a company, using a closed source implementation that also tracks user and breaks Android security model, can censor what apps a user can install and decide what security and privacy compromises a user needs to agree to just use the normal phone functionalities that they pay for and by no mean require those compromises technically. They are turning Android into a service and a prison like iOS did rather than a software.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•[CBH] BentoPDF can now edit existing PDF text along with two new engines.English
1·16 days agoI selfhosted it on my phone and laptop. Great as a replacement of ILovePDF and those CLI tools that have no common interface (I could write some functions to make one tho).

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•There’s a common perception in the U.S. that taking public transit is dangerous. It's actually safer than driving.
51·16 days agoAs a Taiwanese, I have a perception that the US is dangerous, with lots of drug users and gun shots, and even in schools. Is that stereotype or fact?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What exactly is the security of direct messages on lemmy? Does anyone actually use matrix?
4·19 days agoI have a Matrix acc and joined several rooms of FOSS, but sadly it looks like most of them are still less active than their Telegram/Discord counterpart.

I use Proton but now I think if I’m gonna send mails to a Gmail anyway, there’s no much difference except for the subscription ones not being scanned. And for those sites that I have to enter an email, I use addy.io alias or Firefox relay.
