  • You joke, but some people are actually that dumb.

I used to work in the oilfield, first day on a new rig with a new company. We were swabbing (pulling fluid samples, super laid back work) and had 2 guys on, 2 guys off.

Sitting in the doghouse our driller yells over to the rig asking what time it is, I check the clock and yell back “About twenty to four” dude puts his hands on his hips like Karen would and starts to glare at me. My push leans out the window and yelled “Two Four Zero” blew my fucking mind.

Few days later he was dropping people off and we were at a new site so he changed pick up time to quarter to six. But in his mind that meant 25 minutes before 6, or 5:35. Needless to say he got there and I wasn’t ready, which as a new roughneck on a crew is a cardinal sin.

Got in the truck and we drove about a block and I apologized and said I wasn’t expecting him so soon. Dude pulled over looked over his shoulder at me and said “How quarters in a dollar, retard?”. I replied “Four?” “Wrong twenty five!”

Needless to say that job didn’t last long for me.

  • I work in a manufacturing facility, so very much a safety sensitive environment.

We are required to be drug tested as part of a pre-employment screening and potentially after incidents. The cool thing is it is part of our collective bargaining agreement that they are not allowed to screen for THC with a urine sample because of how invasive it is.

Mouth swabs are more expensive, but also only screen for THC within 24 hours. I’m sure that number is up for debate as well, but it is a far cry from the 6-8 weeks you can potentially test positive for with a urine screening.

  • Actual insightful conversation on a variety of subjects. Especially current events, I notice this the most when discussing content updates in video games. While official forums exist a lot of the games I play essentially use their subreddit as a semi-official community with devs being active participants.

/r/eve and /r/pathofexile are great examples of this.

It’s hard to discount the success Reddit has had over the last decade or so positioning themselves as the “front page of the internet” giving people a forum to discuss all manner of subjects.

As I understand a lot of the hatred against Reddit and spez specifically comes from his attempts to monetize this phenomenon, not how effective/popular the site was.
