Dunning-Kruger-effect strikes again?
SpongyAneurysm@feddit.orgOPto techsupport@lemmy.world•Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 (14ALC05) no post.2·7 days agoGood idea. I checked powered on, left it running for a couple minutes to finish booting, turns right off when I press the power-button again.
So, that probably confirms my prior diagnosis, that it might be BIOS corruption, I’m dealing with?

No flak. I do, too.
Interesting read. It also mentions how it’s challenging for software to render 'algo text well. Hence my astonishment, that both my Lemmy-app (Voyager) and a plain text editor on my phone seem to have no trouble at all doing so. (Apart from overlapping the next lines).
And I’m also astonished how that piece of internet culture has largely gone by me, despite decades of heavy internet use… TIL, I guess.
I understood your intended meaning perfectly. Clever use of that stuff!
But I was curious how that works. Thanks for clearing it up a little. Though I’m still wondering, how that stuff gets encoded, and how it’s possible to work on here and why I can even copy it to a plain text editor and it still looks the same there.
Daran dachte ich auch. Aber das ist ja sexuelle Präferenz statt geschlechtliche Identität, nach der gefragt wurde. So gesehen: Thema verfehlt.
Und ich hab mich dann gefragt, ob meine sexuelle Präferenz auch bleiben würde, wenn ich ein anderes Geschlecht hätte… Das bleibt wohl hypothetisch.

SpongyAneurysm@feddit.orgOPto techsupport@lemmy.world•Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 (14ALC05) no post.2·11 days agoUpdate to this thought process:
I’ve set up a Knoppix-Linux Live-USB-stick and confirmed, that I can boot it on a different laptop. But no luck on the Ideapad in question.I think it is likely not a OS-problem, because I would also expect to see the BIOS splash screen and be able to get into BIOS setup, if simply the OS boot were at fault.
SpongyAneurysm@feddit.orgOPto techsupport@lemmy.world•Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 (14ALC05) no post.1·11 days agoAh yes, true. You just made me remember the time I had to blindly navigate another laptops BIOS to turn Switchable Graphics, because it’s screen was broken and it wouldn’t display anything externally, with that setting switched off.
If I do remember correctly, the current patient didn’t have that issue before it broke.
But no, I guess I can’t totally rule out a broken display. If I power the device on, the screen actually gets darker though. That seems to indicate, that it still receives power at least.
What more can I do to rule out a broken screen, when I don’t have any replacement parts ready?
SpongyAneurysm@feddit.orgOPto techsupport@lemmy.world•Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 (14ALC05) no post.1·11 days agoI sometimes get a glimpse of the screen packlight turning on, when I keep the power button pressed for extended time. But nothing actually gets displayed on it.
I think the fact, that an external monitor doesn’t get any signal at all either rules out, that it’s limited to a broken screen, does it?
SpongyAneurysm@feddit.orgOPto techsupport@lemmy.world•Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 (14ALC05) no post.2·11 days agoSorry for the confusion. Afaik “no post” is what people call this behavior I’m describing, where it doesn’t even get to a bootloader or something.
I haven’t tried removing the RAM, since in this model the RAM is soldered to the mainboard, and I lack the equipment and skill to mess with that.
SpongyAneurysm@feddit.orgOPto techsupport@lemmy.world•Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 (14ALC05) no post.2·11 days agoThanks for your reply. But the issue here is, that I can’t even enter the BIOS.
Even if I use the Novo-Button, which should boot into a recovery menu, the screen just stays black. So that doesn’t work
SpongyAneurysm@feddit.orgOPto techsupport@lemmy.world•Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 (14ALC05) no post.2·11 days agoNot really, since I can’t enter BIOS I cannot adjust boot priority, and don’t know what it is set to.
I’ve kinda excluded that as a possibility, but maybe I should try that just for good measure.

You can’t, but they will create a Gmail account for you when you open up a Google account (like when you start using a regular Android phone).
The complaint here is, that you can’t simply use your mail account from a different provider to do something like that and that all of Googles services tie into that Gmail account they create for you.
