They never claimed that. They are currently working on their own index (together with Ecosia), but it is not live yet. So be patient and try it again once their European index finally launches.
Right-wing politicians in Germany happily share those inflated numbers. Thanks CDU/CSU/AfD.

I totally agree on this one. It doesn’t make any sense to me to try and replace Wikipedia. It will fail. Those fandom wikis however are the perfect content for such a new fediverse platform.
Time to donate and switch to Gimp?
2016: I stopped using Google and moved on to then quite new DuckDuckGo. It was my first move to more privacy and less reliance on a monopolist. But I still used many Google, MS and Meta products back then, so I didn’t care that results were powered by Bing. Also back then results seemed to be quite good still, no AI enshitification yet.
2023/2024: Moved to Brave by accident as their new search engine (and own index) was set in the Brave browser by default. I didn’t dislike it, but searches in German language were not that great back then.
2024/2025: Moved to Ecosia. All search engines got worse thanks to AI, so why not at least support the one that supports reforestation projects and plans on creating a shared European index together with Qwant? I really hope that new index is good.
