There’s a pervasive idea that small cars are unsafe because of the people who drive larger cars.

Unfortunately that does indeed seem to be supported by the data. So we have this arms race of everyone wanting the larger cars for their own safety at the cost of everyone else’s, especially non-drivers.

There’s no talking people out of it because it does have a safety benefit. Even if someone hates giant cars, they overwhelmingly feel they have to get one because everyone else is. It’s another way capitalism pits individuals against each other to the detriment of everyone involved. The best way to address it would be to ban oversized cars (or cars in general) so the safety threat is eliminated.

The US having the most stake in the fossil fuel economy is one of the biggest reasons everyone should be adopting renewables.

But that’s only a nominal distinction, and gets into circular arguments like “A is not in B because the definition of B excludes A.” Physically, swimming and flying are basically the same thing. For the smallest insects, the air is viscous enough that their structures and motion for “flying” share more similarities with how aquatic organisms swim than how birds fly.

I think it has more to do with how human languages are necessarily human centric. WE can’t fly through the air (not when those words were being developed) but we can swim through water. So our brains categorise them as different concepts.

Wait till you realise that destroying capitalism necessarily means destroying the environmentally disastrous luxuries that capitalism normalises and encourages.

You think we can just get rid of capitalism and all our capitalist consumption habits would magically be hunky dory? The environment doesn’t give a shit about what ideology you have as far as consequences for humanity are concerned, it gives a shit about whether you’re exceeding the limits of what the system can sustain. Animal agriculture will be just as inefficient, wasteful and unsustainable under any ideology (and just as intrinsically cruel under any ideology), the most a smarter ideology than capitalism can hope to do is recognise that fact and identify it as something we should stop doing.

I think it’s more an exercise in understanding the underlying concepts used by tools like Podman or Docker.

I bet this is done with inodes. Deleted files aren’t truely deleted until nothing has it open and its inode gets dropped. Like ARC for files.

You can also do interesting things like overwrite a “file” (as in a specific filesystem path) with new contents while keeping anything that already has the file open on the old contents by unlinking the old inode to the path and writing the new contents under a new inode. I believe mv does this. The kind of lesser known feature that probably strikes a good balance between preventing super annoying silent errors/corruption and causing them.
