Now you may say, “Aha, we have you hyperbolic hexbears now, it clearly says that the president doesn’t just get to shut it down until they figure out ‘what the hell is going on’!”
Which is correct. What it does is tie their hands such that they must shut the border down when an arbitrary number is reached, so they don’t have to actually do anything and can plead their powerlessness when it happens. After all it’s not up to them, it’s just a mandate of a conservative law… that they want to pass.

Yeah the optics are shit and hard to massage. You have to make it about protesting being violence and antisemitism because there’s no way to sugarcoat all the dead children in Gaza and the rolling discovery of mass graves.
Even the people pushing this law acknowledge that the threat is purely theoretical, no one is advancing any serious argument that data has been or will be shared or leaked or anything of the sort. It’s just xenophobia, if they wanted to protect American citizens’ data they would do something about the way they allow tech companies to just take your data and turn around and sell it to whoever wants it.
Bonus points because US government officials can punt a great bargain basement blowout sale to former US officials by forcing the sale of a company using said xenophobia.
At least that means they will stop using the “wE can PuSh HiM lEfT” line they kept trotting out last tune around, it’s too incredible for even them to believe. It was less than election cycle ago that Trump saying these exact things and wanting these same policies were reasons to vote for Joe. Because who would allow someone who wants to shut down the border “so we can figure out what the hell is going on” to become president?

I’ve seen a few of this guy’s things, he has one where he’s a shop union steward type guy who is doing a routine inspection and it’s pretty good and chill, but the undertones of the more explicitly communist content make me think he’s absorbed a lot of imperial core ideas. Probably a well meaning “most liberal guy I know in Labour” type is my guess.
That said, I do like his voice and his acting. Works for me on that level.

Folks I think the news isn’t feeling well. This is a bold subheading in the article. What happened to their editors?
Is there any plan in the works to take this stuff back? Like, they spent months hyping the spring offensive (do they still have any of that territory? I thought I read Russia was retaking it) but I’m not hearing anything about their plans to regain the initiative. If their position is only going to degrade from here they might want to consider negotiations.
I don’t think China wants to be the enemy of the US. They are the largest trading partner of the US. They seem genuinely interested in cooperating and bettering their own society. USians seem to be the ones bent on enmity. The US apparently thinks building infrastructure and developing the economies of other nations is ‘malign influence.’ The US killed citizens of allied nations through propaganda to ensure they wouldn’t become friendlier with China, who was offering them vaccines while the US and Europe were hoarding their own.
The US sees ‘being a large country and having influence’ as threatening, there’s no way to peacefully coexist with a country that sees everyone else as a threat by default.
