  • I didn’t get the time I wanted to reply to this earlier, but it’s a great help! I am in the US, and I guess in my head I thought it might be like charities, which often are opaque or are good at hiding their misuse of donations (perhaps that’s too cynical a take, lol). It sounds like as long as a center is active and licensed, it’s a pretty safe bet to donate to them which is great because it takes a great deal of decision paralysis away from me.

I indeed don’t have Facebook (or anything but Lemmy really) but I checked out that list and it looks like most of the centers around me have full volunteer rosters, which is of course great but I was also hoping to see about also helping out - guess I’ll just have to be patient!

Thanks again, this has been very useful for me and hopefully anyone else who comes across this looking for ways to help out!

  • I actually just went through this because I previously used iCloud’s Hide my Email service, but I’m de-Appling so I had to find something new. I’ve used Hide my Email, Firefox Relay, and Addy.io.

Hide my Email is hard to replace because it’s shared with the entire @icloud.com address pool, so it’s hard for companies to reject and it’s hard to link all of your aliases together.

I ultimately settled on a combination of having a Tuta paid plan, which gives you a few email addresses, and Addy.io. I chose Addy because it’s run out of Europe (the UK specifically) and has some great power user features while still offering easy-to-use apps for all of the platforms I use. I’ve only had Steam reject an Addy address so far.

At the time, I also thought Firefox Relay only allowed you to use your custom domain, but they do allow you to use the more generic @mozilla.com domain as well for better anonimity. Firefox Relay does have a limit to how long you can reply to emails you’ve received, though (I believe it’s 90 days), it’s run out of the US, and I think Mozilla has done some questionable things recently with respect to privacy.

I didn’t check out SimpleLogin since it’s owned by Proton, and I didn’t check out DuckDuckGo’s offering because I believe it’s also a US company.

  • Great picture, and don’t be sorry one bit, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for and I greatly appreciate it!

I’d wager nobody can fault you for donating to your own outfit, and at the end of the day it’s a win if animals in need are getting help! These really are services that should receive more (read: any) public funding, but… that’s a whole other conversation I suppose.

Sorry to keep asking questions - do you have any advice for vetting local centers for prospective donors? Are there any good ways to make sure the centers are being run in a responsible way, and that the wildlife in their care are being treated well and handled ethically?

  • I know this post is a bit older at this point, but do you have any custom fonts installed? I could reliably reproduce my browser fingerprint as you described, even between Librewolf and Firefox with different configurations (including JavaScript disabled in Librewolf). A visit on one browser would increment the counter, and vice-versa.

I had forgotten that, quite some time ago, I’d installed a font not packaged with my OS - I deleted it, made sure to clear out my site data, changed IPs, and finally got a shiny new fingerprint.

Cross-referencing with EFF’s coveryourtracks site, I also noticed that one metric that almost never changes for me is my audiocontext fingerprint, although I can thwart that by disabling JavaScript, but maybe that’s contributing as well?

  • Thank you, I very much appreciate the info! I did a few searches and was able to find a state-sponsored program for exactly this in their area, so that’s perfect - I can’t believe I never thought of that before, but I guess it’s not something I would have expected to exist.

I’ve always been a fan of birds, with crows and owls being tied for favorite for me. I’ve been looking for something to spend my free time on that isn’t doomscrolling, so maybe I can find a conservation organization near me to volunteer at.

  • I have family with a farm where rats/rodents are an issue. I’m sure they’d love a natural, non-poison solution that also benefits our feathery friends. Would you happen to have any information on programs like this they could look into, or generally what they could search up to find resources for this? I’ve been a fan of this community and your owl posts for a while now, so thank you!

  • I was actually going to recommend taking a look at Mazda vehicles, as they’re quite upscale, reliable, economical, fun to drive, and still have physical instrument clusters (sadly though, only the Miata offers a manual on the higher trims, so on any model but that you’re relegated to losing features to gain the stick shift).

I did find this thread on the GR86 forums (which, as you’re likely aware, is the BRZ’s platform-mate) and saw this place mentioned (no affiliation) with respect to modifying the instrument cluster to open up some customization options, but I didn’t read too far to determine what extent of customization is possible.

As another commenter mentioned, there’s also the WRX, and if you’re not absolutely set on RWD, I’ll again mention the Civic Si, Type R, and also the Integra (really just a dressier Civic) are also options which display speed conventionally, have lots of cargo space, engaging driving dynamics, and a manual option (albeit sometimes finicky - if you haven’t used a Honda manual before, definitely get some seat time behind one before committing).

  • Personally, I like digital speedometers and I think you might get used to it, but in case you’re afraid you won’t, there are usually different display options. Audi, for example, allows you to customize their “Digital Cockpit” from more conventional looking gauges to a “hockey stick” style. Honda, at least as far as the newest Civics are concerned, uses a fully digital display but with conventional-looking dials (with the exception of the Type R, which in Sport+ mode gets a unique display).

I think your best bet might be to narrow down your search to particular cars you’re interested in and either ask here, in some forums specific to that make and model, or ask the salesperson - any of them should be able to help you find out if and how to customize the dashboard to your liking.

Edit: what cars have you looked at so far?

Edit #2: it also sounds like you may be running afoul of the cars’ safety features. Many cars, including mine, are set from the factory to flash, blink, or otherwise highlight the speed when you’ve gone over the limit, even if only by 1 mph / kmh, which I did find distracting. I adjusted the buffer to +10 and it’s much less annoying.
