Sylvan Road in Toowong has been declared Queensland’s most unsafe place to ride a bicycle, with the results revealed as part of Australia’s largest crowd-sourced bike safety project.
The BikeSpot project attracted more than 72,800 submissions throughout Australia, and found more than three-quarters of unsafe spots were at dangerous intersections or areas with no bike lanes.
On average, female riders experienced more riding stress than men, nad were more worried about no bicycle lanes and poor driver behaviour.
Space4cycling Brisbane spokesman Chris Cox says Sylvan Road needed protected bike lanes.
“Sylvan Road is the main connector between two major bikeways, carries over 3000 cyclists per day, but has nothing but painted bike lanes, no parking times that motorists ignore, and dangerous intersections,” he says.
The Bicentennial Bikeway was named Queensland’s safest spot.
Chris also pointed out on Facebook that Sylvan Rd isn’t really the least safe. It’s just a quirk of how the data was collected that places that people are actually riding in spite of the relative danger. Places like Nudgee Rd are arguably worse, but they’re so bad that most people simply give up entirely, whereas Sylvan Rd because basically forced because of its role connecting the Western Freeway Bikeway to the Bicentennial.
Yep, between two very easy to ride bikeways and is almost a trap with a lure of “if you survive at least you can be safe after” meanwhile both drivers and cyclists struggle down that compressed corridor.

I appreciate his ranking system. I can’t help but wonder if it’s the same Chris.
It is. He’s the head of the West Brisbane BUG and is involved with Space4Cycling BNE. He’s a good dude.
