I have been using linux for a couple of years now and the most infuriating thing to this day are when things just dont work when they should, when you have to perform some terminal-fu to make certain things even work.
So here i am, pleading for help for two specific issues before i jump back into using a specific distro (yes, most things a distro does are agnostic and can be achieve by others, but thats not my point here)
Here the things i would like to work (with little to no tinkering if possible) webmotioncapture, runs fine over wine but doesnt detect my camera (vseeface is not an option as it doesnt detect hands and needs some serious code-fu to make that work, also didnt detect my camera)
have my camera work and be detected in linux and wine (Anker PowerConf C200)
if anybody could point into a distro direction, or actually easy to understand absolute minimal tinkering instructions, id be very gratefull
update: i genuinely cant believe it, wecammotioncapture, works under wine, without any tinkering, hallelujah!
You are trying to use a software built from a different operating system, by definition you have to tinker, unless someone already did it for you. That’s how compiled code works
The only way to avoid tinkering is using native applications. With the exception probably of proton, as valve tinkered for the users
proton never works for me so thats out of the question most likely
if you perhaps have an easy to understand (not KISS but actually easy to comprehend) solution, guide, steps or otherwise im happy to listen, i dont mind distro for the most part
I meant proton as an example of a product where someone else did the tinkering for the users that want to use software compiled on a different operating system.
My suggestion is to search for an alternative of the program built for linux. That’s the only way you have to avoid tinkering.
Because using something compiled on a different OS is tinkering
fair enough, thank you
Proton is designed only to be used within Steam, use something like wine-ge-proton outside of Steam (this won’t solve your problem, but keep it in mind)
And don’t use proton for non games, use wine
i sometimes had margin able better results with that one on lutris, but nothing otustanding
thank you but i am aware of these two links
the first one doesnt relate to me, it talks about fov and not making the camera itself work
i explained in my psot how vseeface is not an option due to the camera not working with it
but thank you regardless for your help
Then try installing windows in a virtual machine and use the camera. Why waste time in Linux trying to forcibly make it work.
cause i dont like windows? and trying to make a camera work through virtual machine sounds quite resource intensive
I’ve actually gotten similar software working on Linux, but it’s very far from easy. No distros are going to easily support that out of the box, so unless you find a guide (or write your own to follow) it’s gonna be tough
if its a simple guide, simple as in easy to understand not as in KISS thats fine as i dont consider that as too much tinkering
