What is the right plate:family member ratio for a household? - eviltoast

I’m currently decluttering and reducing to get a handle on my home, and I’ve come to a conundrum of how many plates/bowls/cups/etc do I actually need? I have 2 young kids that we’d prefer not to have to run to the store at 8pm to buy more plates because someone ruined a plate, but very limited cupboard space (small 120-something year old house with a kitchen that was built in the 50s)

Typically for something like plates and bowls its better to have lots to easily replace when one get broken. We had 18 plates when we bought them and now are down to 12 for our large size and 12 for our small size. Glasses have so many different sizes you really only need a single set or two per person since you can always use a different kind. I love to drink whiskey out of tea cups and its fun to play with. You can also go full mismatched sets of everything which can make it cheap since you can get them at garage sales, goodwill, antique stores and the street.
