A few weeks back, my partner decided to dive into his passion for cooking by launching a Kick and Twitch channel to share his recipes and kitchen experiments. After his first few streams, he was visibly disheartened by the lack of views and engagement. He averaged 5-10 viewers which honestly I thought was pretty good, but alas. Not being much of a chef myself, nor savvy about social media promotion, all I could offer was my sympathy.

However, the wheels in my head began to turn, thinking there must be something I could do to lift his spirits. So, I set up accounts on various social media platforms and started engaging with his content: liking, sharing, and even dropping a few chats under different usernames. The change in him was night and day. He burst into the kitchen one evening, ecstatic about the sudden spike in interactions on his stream. He’s oblivious to the fact it’s been me all along.

This newfound audience, even if it’s just me for now, has reignited his passion for cooking, bringing a spark back into his life that I hadn’t seen in a long while, especially with the challenges we’ve all faced during these tough times.

But now, I’m caught in a web of my own making. What began as an innocent gesture to boost his confidence has me tangled in a lie. The thought of revealing that his first fan was me all along fills me with dread, fearing it might snuff out the joy he’s found.
