Image picker - eviltoast

Any plans to make the image picked more expansive so it can use other locations?

The old image picker was so much better that there’s no legitimate comparison, because the old one allowed you to use your gallery app, which is my case is Simple Gallery Pro from F-Droid because it’s the best one there is. I just went from being able to search my microSD card by filename to having some kind of web 3.0 abomination that just shows every picture on local storage in a feed, and an album pane with a whopping 3 albums from local storage. Massive, massive step back. Potentially a deal breaker.

I second this - I can’t seem to get Sync to work as a share target, and it doesn’t provide opening a gallery or standard file picker during submit, which makes sharing an old image from any folder it doesn’t decide is an “album” impossible. Really hope this gets sorted out

Yeah, not sure about this new image picker - it only seems to be able to access three folders, but I have a lot more than that. Is there a way to give Sync access to whichever folders I choose? Or better, to be able to access through my gallery app?

Just tested and the image picker extract pictures from the whole storage and that’s exactly the goal of the component : extract all pictures so you don’t have to give storage permission to your whole phone to the app

Never mind, this dumb old guy was just looking at albums instead of photos.

In addition to what others wrote, here’s a practical example:

I wanted to insert an old photo in a comment, from my Google Photos. The photo doesn’t exist on my device, since it was taken from an old phone. I located the photo in Goolge Photos and downloaded it to my device. Then I went to pick the photo in Sync, but it was neither visible under “recent”, nor in any of the albums. So I had no choice but to scroll thru hundreds of photos to manually look for it, and found it under the original date the photo was taken - which makes sense, but in the previous gallery, my recently downloaded photos would appear at the top.

I’ve only got a few hundreds of photos so this isn’t a big issue for me, but I can imagine it’ll be a dealbreaker for people with thousands of photos on their device.

the Google Photos app is actually supposed to be able to hook into the new android media picker, not sure what’s taking them so long

It’s really not, which is Google’s fault. Just the ability to sidestep it for the user’s gallery app of choice would be worlds better

Why not use the native picker which would allow us to use Photos for example? Seems like a waste of developer resources to reinvent the wheel.
