This was the library display at my university today - eviltoast

Here is the artist and his bio:

“Originally from Jõhvi, Estonia, the artist now lives and works in Ukraine. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014 he has been involved in creating political posters, highlighting important events of the war. In 2022 alone, he has created over 500 posters on the theme of war and invasion. His works are widely recognized worldwide, and his poster exhibitions have been showcased in the US, Estonia, Lithuania, Japan, and Germany. In 2022, the museum of Ukrainian Poster recognized him as the best poster artist in the country. In 2023, he was included in the list of 100 most influential people in Ukraine during the war, according to the Ukrainian Pravda publication. Nikita has received awards for his volunteer activities.”

These were on display at my school… no shame.

This made me realize just how alone I am here.

Right?! When I first walked by it I did a double-take because I could not believe what I saw. Just straight up out in the open, in an ACADEMIC institution! How do they not see this shit as inappropriate???

Maybe you could sneakily print out and put next to it some informative texts about the OUN and show their flag specifically?

I’ve wanted to do something like that for the Nazi monuments that are around, like print a poster and display it next to the statue to educate people and who and what it’s actually about (rather than doing graffiti).

For this display at school I don’t think I’d be able to get away with it as where it is located has a lot of foot traffic. It’s specifically placed where the entrances intersect so anyone entering will see it in all its glory. If I tried to post my own info about the OUN I would definitely get super caught…

It’s not a notice board, this display is thick posters on easels displayed in the middle of the library first floor where all the entrances intersect. We do have notice boards around campus though that I could post flyers on them relatively unharmed/unnoticed, just not where these posters were displayed.

From the prestigious…Museum of Ukrainian Poster.

I assume they have like 3 artists represented there.

I have no idea what Museum he’s talking about, maybe it’s a section of a museum dedicated to posters? Either way it’s fucking weird. Also, I’m going to sound like an asshole, but I’ve definitely seen much better posters…

The second I read that my brain just went “yeah that checks out.” No offence to our Estonian comrades, but come on.

Also, sorry that the photos are at weird angles, I tried to take them without people knowing what I was doing. I had my phone camera on but covered my screen with my book so it wasn’t obvious I was filming, I was able to take photos by pressing the volume buttons. Real spy shit. Somebody hire me for espionage.

I will also say that these 4 posters were the only ones out of around 16 that displayed the fascist flag, that’s why I posted these ones specifically. The others were the same theme but no black-red flag. I feel like this is important to mention. Either way, four posters of this flag is four too many…

Yes, it’s a very “interesting” poster, the lowercase Russia is something too. I don’t know if Nikita wrote it himself or if someone from my school’s Ukrainian league did (either way I do believe they had this set up).

You don’t know how badly I want to talk to my professors about this but I know it’ll probably just get me in trouble. Blatant propaganda in the middle of the university with no shame or afterthought. More Canadians loving on fascists, who would’ve thought? Call the presses!

      It’s fucking embarrassing…

Aa yes, refusing to acknowledge Russia as a proper noun is really going to show them who is boss.
“The Canada” is a weird affectation that almost seems like a passive-aggressive reprisal to people who said ‘the Ukraine’.

" In 2022, the museum of Ukrainian Poster recognized him as the best poster artist in the country." That…is a sentence.

Every minute I look at this, I just find new more terrible things.

I genuinely cannot tell if Russia being in lowercase is purposeful or just a typo. Putting “the” in front of Canada is also weird, and if it is a slight toward people who say “the Ukraine” then thats also just as weird. I don’t understand why people get mad when you say “the Ukraine.” Is it rude in general?

The museum of Ukrainian Poster part…. I know the image is blurry so I thought I misread it but the French part is more clear and using a translator it is literally “the Museum of Ukrainian Poster” lol. I don’t think there is a Ukrainian museum completely dedicated to posters, maybe he meant a poster section? It’s all just so strange. I don’t even think this guy is here for a seminar or anything, I think the admin and him collared to put his posters up. He’s done a similar thing but for Americans instead of Canadians so… there’s that.
