What are some good real privacy podcasts/channels? - eviltoast

I started out watching some YouTube channels that claim to be dedicated to keeping me private and secure with recent news but found that some of them have a history of advertising NordVPN. Those channels sometimes sounded like they were defending Apple then telling people if they don’t like the content then to just scram. Also, they would talk about custom roms for Android, then eventually when the channel got more viewers, the host makes a video advertising Google and why he now uses stock Google Android and saying that it’s advanced. These channels, I sometimes find, either have bots or loyal followers on YouTube and Reddit that are ready to gaslight someone for questioning them. They don’t hang out on other platforms like Odysee which is strange.

What is a good podcast about privacy and security?

      Tbh, i wouldn’t recommend some of the channels above

      Still subscribed to techlore, but have a lot of questions about their stands on privacy etc

      Also, Luis Rossmann is a really really great guy, love his work, but he is a little bit boring to watch or listen to

        Each to their own preferences. Some of these sources disagree with each other, and that’s a good thing. The worst place to belong, is within an echo chamber. Always think for yourself, and try to understand where others are coming from (why they came to the conclusions they did).

        As for Louis… honestly, I prefer his tempo. It feels more genuine, less like he’s putting on a show for the camera. In the tech world, take Craft Computing, LTT, or Jays2Cents as examples. All have gone on record to admitting to putting on a show, changing how they talk, etc, while on camera. If Louis is putting on a show, I gotta admit, I’m impressed. Hats off to the guy.

          Have never heard of this guy

          My problem with techlore is that they are ok with using google, apple, facebook

          They pretty much promote proton, and kinda disencourage selfhosting

    He gets some hate but Rob Braxman on YouTube/Odyssey was one of my gateway drugs into the privacy community. He is kind of obnoxious at times but lays out a lot of technical and basic advice pretty well I think. Learned about degoogled phones and Bluetooth risks from him as a couple of examples. I also second Luis Rossman on YouTube/Grayjay, he’s more on the philosophical and legal side of things.

    I’ve been listening to Security Now for over 10 year now. Steve Gibson is highly intelligent and does an excellent job of explaining technical topics like how a new exploit actually works and how the mitigation functions, without making the listener feel like they need a PHD first.

    Both Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson occasionally have opinions I don’t agree with, and they’ve had sponsors in the past that turned out later to have their own issues. But they’ve been quick to remove sponsors that are actively bad, and they’re honest about their relationships with their sponsors anyway.

    It’s also refreshing to hear a more pragmatic (realistic) approach to balancing security with usability. Ie: your grandma doesn’t work for the NSA, so she doesn’t need a custom-built secure desktop with YubiKey running Qubes. She needs a password vault or notebook and you to occasionally update her machine.

    I used to listen Michael Bezzel who is the owner of inteltechniques.com . Really nice and educational podcast but he is on a break atm. Check the website you will find bery useful information about privacy.
