Why is it that around 4/5 Posts or Comments just won't show up? - eviltoast

Ever since I joined 6 Months ago, I’ve had the issue where comments or entire posts won’t show up. Recently it has gotten even worse, where it feels like I can only see 20% of what lemmy has to offer…

To be a bit more exact, the Comment Count under posts and the total posts of a Community are always far more then what is actually there. Furthermore, if I post something and someone comments under it, I can read the comment in the inbox, but if I click on it to open it under the post itself, it simply isn’t there. Thats also why im certain that all those missing posts and comments are actually there, just not displayed

I believe non of those stem from defederated places. The only idea I could come up with is that back when I first joined, there was a discussion around some language settings that could screw with that for some reason. But nowadays I can’t find those threads, so I figured I’d ask here.

Thanks!

Pretty sure its because this instance purges the whole comment chain below a comment when a comment is removed. Afaik this isnt typical behavior, most instances have a ‘comment removed by mod’ and shows the rest of the thread. Those comments arent technically removed, you can see them in people’s profiles and in search results, so I assume its a quick mod to this server.

The thing is, as long as they are in the inbox, I can respond to them, and the others do react to those comments I leave. That also wouldnt explain why its like 80% missing, I highly doubt that this many people delete thier posts and comments

Nah its specifically some sort of tool the admins or mods use for this instance and its a little buggy. You can respond even though the thread is hidden because technically those comments werent deleted.

This is simply incorrect. It’s a voyager feature, and it has been used exactly one time on this instance.

The problem the OP is describing is related to the way language settings are handled by Lemmy itself. They need to make sure they include their spoken languages and undetermined.

This isnt the only instance where this is happening thought? Its happening everywhere. And most of those comments don’t break any rules either to warrent it being hidden?

That’s not really an instance thing. Some apps offer the feature, and it’s a feature I’ve used exactly once.

No, that’s not what it is. It’s a language setting issue which is a problem with Lemmy itself.

It’s a language setting issue with Lemmy itself. You need to make sure your spoken languages and “undetermined” are selected in your preferences, otherwise the lemmy interface hides content from you if it doesn’t have any language tags.

You may want to go into your Settings and under Languages select both “Undetermined,” “English,” and whatever else you want to see.

The settings page has a warning on it saying that if you deselect Undetermined you won’t see most content, but in my experience, most content in my communities is in English and won’t appear unless you’ve specifically selected it
