Or rather, tropes that tend to be used in a cheap/lazy way in order to get emotions out of the audience. I’ve been hearing “shock value for shock’s sake” for a long time now as a way of describing attempts to provoke negative emotions from the viewer without any substance, and it’s made me start to wonder what other devices have developed a negative connotation over the years for their misuse. Which ones come to mind in the movies you’ve seen, and how are they lazily used?
