Fdroid releases are delayed by maybe a week compared to the Github repo. At some point I switched to installing from the Github releases because of that.
Yes, you have to check and install versions manually.
I don’t install every single release, just every couple weeks when I get around to it or when there’s an acute issue.
I also get notifications from newreleases.io, where you can basically follow Github or other repositories/registries to receive email notifications for updates. So I don’t necessarily check the repo, but get release notes in my inbox and decide if it’s worth upgrading from there.
