Making a more robust storage solution - eviltoast

I had a Synology DS218+ (2 bay, 6TB) RAID 1 setup for my home network. Movies, personal and work documents, music etc. My house was hit with an electrical surge from a storm and the NAS, router, and switch were all hit…modem was okay somehow. Apparently the surge protector they were plugged into (shared) exceeded its usefulness. Unfortunately the hard drives in the NAS are toast too which sucks so damn much, but nothing I can do at this point.

Looking forward, how can I prevent this from happening in the future? My initial thought is to just proactively change out the surge protector every 2 years, but I’m not sure if there’s a better alternative.
