Garden office - fiber optic or Ethernet? - eviltoast

Hi everyone

I have very little knowledge in this space.

I’m setting up a garden office and need fast internet speeds.

My plan is to run a cable between a router in the house and the garden shed. Overall the distance is 26 meters.

I can’t use the power lines because they are coming from a different box, separate to the house.

Any general advice would be appreciated but I’m specifically interested to know if a fiber optic cable would be better than a Ethernet cable?

If so, how would you connect the fiber optic cable to the house router/wifi point in the garden shed? (i can see that the connector is different but I have no idea how to resolve it. Both the router and shed WiFi point has Ethernet connections)

Many thanks

Phil

Do you need a cable or is a good Wi-Fi connection enough? You have three options, since 26m is not very far.

    1. Run fiber. You can use so called media converted to convert from ethernet (copper) to fiber, you need them on both ends, they both need power.
    2. Run an ethernet cable. Since it runs outside, make sure you use a S/FTP cable that is properly grounded on both ends and use ethernet surge protectors to prevent your gear from being fried by lightning.
    3. Install a directional Wi-Fi access point on the outside of your house pointing in the direction of your garden office.
