Rumours have it that there’s a new Apple TV 4K coming in the first half of next year. Would it be worth waiting for it or buying now?
I’ve had the 1st, 2nd, and third gen ATV 4k and if you put it side by side I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference besides the remote.
I’m still using the 1st generation apple tv 4k( 2017 ) and i have nothing to complain
It doesn’t support continuity camera
Do you use the YouTube app? I just upgraded to the latest 4K gen from the first generation 4K and it’s so much better. That app was getting unusable because it was so slow and non responsive.
Interesting. We use the YouTube app for hours every day and have 0 issues or lag. Apple TV 4K 1st gen, had it for 6 years.
Yes every day. It runs fine.
The youtube app is super laggy on my first gen 4K.
There are always rumors of new ones. Sometimes they’re true, sometimes they’re not.
If you need it, get it.
The question would be, what else can they add?
Purely speculation on my part, but there’s three things I could see reasonably get added in a new version:
• Better processor (which will only matter for gaming, really)
• Built in Microphone for Siri smart home controls
• Tools for Vision Pro compatibility (such as the pop-up view like what it will do with the Mac)
• An entirely new, smaller/cheaper version built just for streaming
Do any of these features, or any others you imagine, make it worth waiting? And of course, none of these are guaranteed, though the first is probable, and there are rumors of the last one.
It’s a tough decision, but if you’re only going to use it for streaming, I’m not sure it’s worth waiting unless you’re sure the cheap one will come out.
• An entirely new, smaller/cheaper version built just for streaming
Why they haven’t come out with a cheaper ‘stick’ version yet is mind boggling. Sure, Apple can afford to play the long game.
I hope they offer two options. A cheap stick for streaming and a second fully featured box top with display for home automation.
Maybe Dolby True HD?
Software limitation, not hardware.
Yea this is a new info for me. I was thinking it would be a hardware limitation.
TrueHD has only ever required HDMI 1.1 (since 2005)
Honestly a better processor is what’s making me think about waiting; hence my question
You know they could keep the Same processor and keep new processor for the expensive Pro model… I am also on the fence for 128gb. Holding as of now as I missed the $99 offer at Costco
The $99 Costco deal ends on the 27th. (So tomorrow) go get one.
Costco had the 128GB version for $99 in September.
Meh, if you have no ATV, just look for a deal on the current ATV
Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada has the 32GB ATV 2021 on for $99.99CAD. But there is a special points redemption on for Black Friday whereby you cash in 70K points to get $100 off. Just have to add a cheap item to get the amount before tax above the $100 threshold. That’s what I did this morning. After taxes, I paid less than $21CAD for my box…
The av1 decoder from the iphone 15 pro soc. That would be useful for future proofing. That being said the a15 should still be able to soft decode av1 probably, as it is plenty powerful.
The new processor might have AV1 hardware coding support which could be a benefit if you’re playing high bitrate 4k+ files encoded with AV1.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they add an Apple TV HomePod that can serve as a center channel speaker.
audio passthrough
I know, I’m being ridiculous

Definitely feels like most technology is hitting a plateau. High interest rates throttling investment in R&D and potentially hitting an asymptote on what physics will allow… new phones / new TVs / etc seem only slightly better than years prior…
OTA tuner would be nice. Maybe even AM/FM/HDRadio tuner?
Apple TV box is a product that is out of ideas. Essentially every new AppleTV box comes with useless upgraded processor and (never fulfilled) promises of how this processor is going to lead to new things. That’s it. Once in blue moon Apple refreshes remote control, usually to the worse.
Anyone having problems with the continue watching in the TV app.
Lately I’ve been watching Discovery content in max and all of a sudden the TV app says they’re not on max, but only in Discovery Plus.
I don’t think that has anything to do with the Apple TV. That sounds like it’s discovery making that change of pulling content.
It has to do with the TV app.
For example I love watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Max says there’s 45 seasons and the TV app only says there’s only 7 seasons.
Now I put the current episode I’m watching in up next. Then I click on it and brings me to the open in section and and I click on open in and it doesn’t give the option for max even though I’ve been watching it on max.
It was working correctly until a few days ago.
I’d have to see for myself, but I know these companies do tend to “throttle” their content. At the end of the day, they want you in their app.
No idea if that pertains to what you’re dealing with though, so apologies if it’s not.
I would wait
What features would you be waiting for?
I was having the conversation with some other dad’s at a party yesterday on the 4K. The jump in price that undertook is the thing that harms the product.
Different rumours are going around but this needs to have a drop in price and if they offered a 2k only version as well that was even cheaper… The latter would sell more.
The old $99 Apple TV was appealing.Rumour has it that the new ones will have a faster processor and larger storage due to them leaning heavily into gaming in the near future. Essentially making the Apple TV a gaming console as well as a streaming box
The only benefit at this point because they really have hit a wall with the Apple TV (unless you want 8k) is to make an Apple TV with a disc drive. I know seems backwards but there are still a lot of people that enjoy physical copies. I myself have gone more digital.
LOL, you think Apple will add a physical media disc slot to a streaming device. You don’t know Apple very well do you?
There are no legit rumors about a new model. The current model is better than ANY streamer on the market. Buy one and you’ll never regret it. Wait for rumors and you’ll be waiting forever.
Just buy it. Can’t see how much better the new one will be. Maybe faster processor for gaming. But who cares. If you want to upgrade later, just sell your old one.
I would see it more on the content side of things. Is there anything you like to access now that the Apple TV offers? Then yeah it’s worth it. Also check if your TV has Apple TV already.
The new one is coming out first half of next year and will be cheaper
