Outdoor cabling - cat 6/7 or fibre? - eviltoast

Hey all,

I live in an old house in the UK that doesn’t have wall cavities - single brick around the exterior.

I want to connect my ground and first floors in preparation for getting 1.6Gb FTTP installed. I plan to route a cable outside up the wall.

I have a switch on each floor with a spare sfp+ port so I have the option of either cat6/7 or fibre. The length between floors should suffice for 10GbE on cat6

Which should I go for? I’m leaning towards fibre as it might be easier to work with and more future proof.

Cheers

No matter the way you go (I lean to copper less you fancy trying to use pre-made fibre cables) then make sure:

    1. You use outdoor rated cables
    2. Shield from sunlight (conduit)
    3. Put drip loops in where they come back in the house
    4. Run a spare if you can
    5. Try and mouse / rat proof them (conduit)
