What Router for a 1gbs fiber connection? - eviltoast

Living in Japan.

3LDK apartment so not very big.

1gbs fiber.

Currently using a Buffalo whr-1166dhp3

Speeds are abyssmal. Had it 3 hears. I get 40-50 down on wifi and 90-99 on ethernet.

My ethernet link speed is fixed at 100 on pc and can’t change it so I want to change ethernet cable which is easy but what router should I get?

I ordered a TPlink AX80 but I believe it is overkill?

My devices are PC, Smart TV, two smartphones. Sometimes laptop/switch but rarely.

We do lots of 4k streaming, downloading and playing online games together (couple).

Could be ethernet cable issue since ethernet stuck at 99Mbps. Unless your PC has 100Mbps network card?

Could be. The wifi performance is equally abyssmal but the ethernet is not great.

I decided I will get the ax53u which is on sale, if this fixes the problem then great. If not I can return it via Amazon.

I also plan on getting a nee Lan cable today. My lan runs across the house. It also goes through a door we sometimes close on the lan. Am I right in assuming this may have damaged the cable?

First, check the Ethernet WAN cable. The ISP generally provides you a copper handoff to your router and that cable could be bad. That would make the most sense at this point since one bad conductor would limit you to 100Mbs.

I’d then try a direct connection with the laptop via Ethernet cable to the ISP copper handoff bypassing your router. You should be getting at least 900Mbs at that point.
