Budget Starter NAS Build - eviltoast

Hi all,

I’m considering getting into the game and building a budget NAS from scratch. How does this build look as a simple, relatively cheap starting point?

I’ve definitely considered that route. My main reasons for favoring this approach:

    1. I can buy part-by-part over time as sales come up
    2. Im interested in learning by building my own

I was hoping that I could find a good Black Friday sale on Synology and then I’d probably go that way, but I haven’t seen a big sale anywhere

Here is one. But I don’t blame you for wanting to build your own. You could just start with an old desktop, throw some drives in it and install your choice of nas software. Might give you more money to buy more storage for your nas.
