Close to 70 devices, a lot of WiFi IoT. Started to see instability. Have I added one device too many? - eviltoast

I have an Asus RT-AC88U with a RT-AC66U as an AI-Mesh node, servicing a~1200 sq. ft. place. My WAN comes from a cable modem, with a 5G router as backup (the WiFi radios are turned off).

On a regular basis I have around 65 devices connected, with a bunch of IoT over wifi. Recently I started to add Thread devices, and that’s when I started to see some network instability, namely, random disconnections from both the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks.

Is there a way for me to troubleshoot these issues? Am I overloading my router? If so, what is a good recommendation for a replacement?

You might want to look into the newer tri-band devices. Usually the third band is for mesh communications but if you are not doing mesh the third band (usually a second 5G band) can be used for devices. Alternatively the 6E tri-band devices use 6G but there are very few end-user devices that use the 6g band.
