I have the same issue, and that’s affecting my productivity a lot. I’ve even disabled history from my entire Google account, so that I’m not suggested videos. But that’s still not working. Fuck you Google, you’re like that enabler friend who will force his alcoholic friend to drink even if he’s suffering from gangrene.

I disabled shorts and went through my front page and said to not show me stupid addictive content and then also took two weeks off. I also used libredirect addon on Firefox to redirect all YouTube links to inviduos so that if a link somewhere took me there I didn’t get sucked right back.

I have always counted it as such too, but I don’t post on there.

What makes YouTube social media for me is the following

        • everyone can post content, in the forms of video everyone else can comment, rate and follow
        • algorithm based browsing of video content and comment sorting
        • images, text posts and polls can be posted to followers
        • shorts is basically TikTok, so if that is social media so are shorts

Older people ignore the comment sections in their factorization. I think this can be fair but also isn’t necessarily when we consider things like livestreams on twitch and youtube, where you will have actual communities form on the platform itself, who communicate and form friendships and relationships. Unlike message boards and forums typically have, there is a “main character” if you will, but I don’t think that makes it asocial.

There’s also the participatory, communicative environment people feel even as smaller creators. It’s not like film and TV where you need an entire network and brand backing you, and as such it’s pretty democratized to be a social outlet for people.

Big Clive, Ben Krasnow, Mike’s Electric Stuff, Folding Ideas, Practical Engineering, Nurd Rage, Alpha Phoenix, Ben Eater, Diode Gone Wild, EEVBlog, Huygens Optics, Jeri Ellsworth, Woodgears, every god damned DefCon talk.

The ONLY saving grace of YouTube is that you can fucking learn anything on any subject if you can find the right channel.
