Have any of you noticed that the YouTube algorithm seems to be recommending more and more videos with very few viewer count? - eviltoast

for about a year, the 3rd video in my sidebar recommendation list is a video that is related to the topic, but generally only has <100 views. most of the time unter 20 views.

And it’s always the 3rd video

I was just about to comment about the 3rd video thing. It’s always in that same spot. Although for me sometimes it isn’t even related to the current video it’s (seemingly) random.

I’ve had this, too. Sometimes the videos are quite cool, but most of the time they’re irrelevant or poorly made

Yes, definitely I’ve noticed that. When they’re good, I really appreciate it. It lets me discover people I wouldn’t have heard of. Sometimes they’re just weird nonsense though, or just straight up bad.

I’ve not had this particular issue. What frustrates me is that autoplay seems to play videos from only one channel. I like the channel, but even if it’s not related to the last video that ended it’ll still auto play that channel.

The channel is No Rolls Barred which is a board game channel. I’ll be watching a science related video and boom, board games. It’s annoying.

Mine does the same thing with Adam savages content. Literally half of my front page is his stuff and I’ve already watched most of it. For some reason yt is determined to suggest I rewatch all of his videos multiple times despite the fact that I follow quite a lot of varied creators.

When I go without watching him for a while it stops, but if I watch a single video it becomes rampant again.

I like car builds, diablo and comedy. I get very few of that. It’s mostly click bait stuff.

I almost never have any of the experiences with YouTube’s recommendations that I constantly see others talking about. It seems pretty damn good at finding things similar to things I’ve watched to completion and/or liked. Like to the point that it’s scary weird how close the content is as well as how similarly the hosts sound/look. The only thing I dislike about what it shows me is that it never actually notifies me of new videos from channels I am subscribed to and have the notifications enabled for. I almost always end up just finding those on the recommended feed list hours or days after the upload.

Me neither. I’m a liberal gun nut, so imagine the shit I must see.

It’s just normal channel hosts, nothing political, stuff like Forgotten Weapons. (Even if you’re not into guns, Iam, aka Gun Jesus, is a pleasure to listen to!)

Plus, I get a lot of cool content that’s somewhat related. Outdoor stuff and the like.

I honestly don’t understand how people are getting these radical and spiraling insane recommendations.

      • I half suspect it’s users who are not logged in and the content is just generalized for the area they are connecting from. Or perhaps even through using a VPN and showing content associated with the IP you happen to be using, as others would have probably been using that IP as well and I can see by logging out myself that it still shows things it would show me when logged in so I have no doubt they also just keep track of what content is being viewed by anyone connecting from a particular IP address.

Yes and it feels subjectively to be connected to generally more rigours testing / recommendations specifically in the way that nowadays YouTube is much faster to get me recommended channels that are a little further away but still close to the stuff I’m already watching.

Unfortunately that’s true if I watch good video essays or effin vtuber clips so…

Yes, and I usually click out of curiosity further reinforcing the algorithm.

I’m very new to using rss. Recently I have come across people mentioning about adding rss feeds of youtube channels to rss readers. I’m curious to know how to get the URL of youtube channel rss so I could add it to my reader (I hope I am wording it correctly). I am using feeder app.

There are guides on this, just search for them. Quick version: on a Youtube video do ctrl+U to see the page source, then search for "UC. This is the channel ID. Then the URL is in the format https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UC5UAwBUum7CPN5buc-_N1Fw
