ā¢ The episode title, āThe Inner Fightā calls back to two previous titles, TNGās āThe Inner Lightā and VOYās āThe Fightā.
ā¢ Weāve seen outpost scientists wearing the same jumpsuits as the Persioff IX researchers in āMining the Mindās Minesā and āReflectionsā.
ā¢ TāLyn commentās that Marinerās behaviour āhas grown increasing dangerous since [the] mission to Ferenginarā referencing travel guide updating duty the Lower Deckers were assigned in āParth Ferengiās Heart Placeā.
ā¢ Ransom pulls up a display of four of the vessels weāve seen attacked by the Mysterious Threat over the course of the season: Bynar, Orion, Romulan, and Ferengi. The only ship missing is the Klingon Bird of Prey, IKS CheāTaā.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Ransom specifies that all the attacks have been against non-Federation ships, which establishes that the Bynaus is not a Federation member world.
ā¢ Apparently someone is targeting ex-Starfleet officers, and there are four specific individuals the Starfleet is concerned about locating:
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Seven of Nine - Though she severed on the USS Voyager, Seven of Nine was technically never Starfleet; instead she was more akin to a civilian contractor. She will not actually become a Starfleet officer until season three of PIC, 20 years after this episode, more or less. Seven may have already joined the Fenris Rangers by this point.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Beverly Crusher - At this point, Doctor Crusher has left Starfleet and is still pregnant with, or has given birth to her son with Captain Picard, Not David Marcus.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Thomas Riker - Will Rikerās transporter duplicate. Last seen in āDefiantā leading a team of Maquis. He turned himself over to the Cardassians to serve in a labour camp; Kira gave him her word they would get him out, and he was never mentioned on DS9 again.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Nick Locarno - The senior cadet in Nova Squadron, Nick was expelled from Starfleet Academy after getting one of his team members killed performing a dangerous and banned flight maneuver, and then getting the other members to lie about it, in āThe First Dutyā.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Ransom summarizes the events of āThe First Dutyā.
ā¢ The USS Vancouver was seen in āCupidās Errant Arrowā.
ā¢ Mariner, Tendi, TāLyn, and Boimler take the shuttlecraft Death Valley on their danger buoy girls trip, which is the shuttle Tendi arrived to the USS Cerritos on in āSecond Contactā.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Normally the Death Valley has the same NCC-77567 registry that all the Cerritos shuttles have, but in this episode we see that registry, along with NCC-70492, which is the registry of the Vancouver.
ā¢ Tendi comments that it looks as though someone tampered with the communication relays on the danger buoy, and then we see it through the viewscreen of the CheāTaā. In āThe Vulcan Helloā, the USS Shenzhou was investigating a communications relay that had been sabotaged by TāKuvmaās followers.
ā¢ The CheāTaā appears to be under the command of Gāreck, who was introduced in āwej Dujā as one of the Klingon lower deckers.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ In āTwovixā Gāreck commented that Maāah ā[would not] be captain much longer,ā and his spear was the one floating in the fabricated wreckage of the CheāTaā
ā¢ When we see the exterior of the CheāTaā is has a representation of the Kolvoord Starburst, as shown in āThe First Dutyā, painted on the port wing structure.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Nick has the same image on his jacket when we see him later in the episode.
ā¢ On the planet Sherbal V, we see the commanding officers of various ships attacked by the Mysterious Threat throughout the season:
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Gem - Ferengi captain introduced in āParth Ferengiās Heart Placeā - played by Eric Bauza, who a number of characters in PRO, LDS, and the āVery Short Treksā, including Ass Face, Screwhead, and the information broker in this episode
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Vreck - Romulan sub-commander introduced in āI Have No Bones Yet I Must Fleeā - played by Paul F. Tompkins who is the voice of Doctor Migleemo
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Maāah - Klingon captain introduced in āwej Dujā - played by Jon Curry
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Cosmia - Orion captain introduced in āSomething Borrowed, Something Greenā - played by Kari Wahlgren voices a variety of LDS characters, such as the Anabaj from āEnvoysā, and news anchor Sylvia Ront in āGroundedā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Zāoto - Orion first officer introduced in āSomething Borrowed, Something Greenā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ The Ferengi first officer introduced in āParth Ferengiās Heart Placeā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ The Romulan officer introduced in āI Have No Bones Yet I Must Fleeā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ The Bynar co-captains introduced in āA Few Badgeys Moreā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ There is also a pair of Cardassians commanding officers; we did not see any Cardassian vessels attacked by the Mysterious Threat
ā¢ When Maāah steps in the trap set up by Gem and Vreck, we see that his blood is a bright pink, as Klingon blood has occasionally been depicted, such as in āStar Trek: The Undiscovered Countryā and āBattle at the Binary Starsā.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Gāreckās blood is also the same colour and Maāah bites him to death.
ā¢ āCaptain, did you know we have pockets?ā Rutherford discovers that Starfleet uniforms are made from smart technology that accommodates the wearerās needs, such as in āEnsign Roā when Ro was able to unzip her uniform jacket in the front, despite the uniform clearly having its closure in the back.
ā¢ Capān Freeman, Rutherford, and Shaxs visit Mudds, a dive bar which shares itās name with one Harcourt Fenton Mudd, introduced in āMuddās Womenā.
ā¢ The doorman at Mudds is played by Paul Scheer, who voices chief engineer Billups.
ā¢ āJippers are half price for tripeds today.ā In āThe Escape Artistā, Muddās android duplicates were programmed to claim, āIf I had any money, Iād be sipping jippers on a beach somewhere.ā
ā¢ āThe Klingons are up to something. Just like when they attacked us with the Pakleds.ā Mariner references the events of āwej Dujā and she, Tendi, and Boimler learn that TāLyn was present at that fight. TāLyn also apparently learns that the Cerritos was Starfleet ship the VCF Shāvhal was fighting alongside.
ā¢ āTeach me how to tap-dance, Beverly Crusher.ā We learned in āDataās Dayā that Doctor Crusher was once known as the Dancing Doctor, and she taught Data to dance in that same episode.
ā¢ Mariner explains to Maāah that she received a promotion she didnāt want, and that she tired to get demoted but her commander wouldnāt follow through, recalling events in āTwovixā and āI Have No Bones Yet I Must Fleeā.
ā¢ āBack at the Academy my dream was to be a captain.ā In āMuch Ado About Boimlerā we learned that everyone in Marinerās class thought she would be the first of them to make captain.
ā¢ We learn that Mariner was friends with Sito Jaxa, who was introduced in āThe First Dutyā and died in the TNG episode, āLower Decksā. Mariner references both episodes explaining who Sito was to Maāah.
ā¢ We learned in āWeāll Always Have Tom Parisā that Mariner was stationed on Deep Space 9, but this is her first mention of having actually fought in the Dominion War.
ā¢ āKlingons do not hug!ā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Worf hugged an Edosian woman in āJusticeā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Worf hugged Alexander in āReunionā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Kor hugged Jadzia upon their reunion in āBlood Oathā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Worf hugged Doctor Crusher in āThe Bountyā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Worf hugged Troi and Riker in āSurrenderā
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ Worf hugged Raffi in āThe Last Generationā
ā¢ The information broker has had cosmetic surgery to resemble the puppet Balok used to appear intimidating in āThe Corbomite Maneuverā
ā¢ Tendi is able to use her leverage as Mistress of the Winter Constellations to get Cosmia to listen to Mariner. We learned of Tendiās title during the first girls trip in āWeāll Always Have Tom Parisā.
ā¢ Nick Locarno was behind the Mysterious Threat! The Nicksterious Threat!
ā¢ Nick is voiced by Robert Duncan McNiell, who played the character in āThe First Dutyā, as well as Steth and Janeway in āVis Ć Visā, and the Marseilles character featured in the EMHās holonovel in āAuthor, Authorā.
Ā Ā Ā ā¢ The animated version of Nick Locarno looks similar to the animated version of Tom Paris, both there are some noticeable differences beyond the stubble and scar. Nick eyebrows angle up, where as Parisā angle down, and Nickās nose points down while Parisā is slightly upturned.
My apologies that this oneās going up late, even by my standards. Between work, social obligations, and my internet going out during the time I normally have to write these, I wasnāt able to get it up when Iād like. Still, it is (barely) before the next episode drops, so thereās that.
I wasnāt able to get it up when Iād like
Thatās normal as we get older ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Tell that to the Baku.
Iād forceably relocate an entire planet for a little metaphasic radiation right now.

I assume it was because you were tracking down instances of Klingons hugging?
It was a lot to scrub through every episode of Trek to find all the relevant instances, but I do feel like thatās the sort of accuracy people have come to expect.
ā¢ Worf hugged Alexander in āReunionā
I simply refuse to believe this. There is no way Worf could have acknowledged Alexanderās existence long enough to hug him. But maybe this says something about my own upbringing that I rather not look at.
Thank you as always for posting these!
Worf also hugged Raffi in the last episode of Picard.
Nice catch. Thanks!
Rutherford discovers that Starfleet uniforms are made from smart technology that accommodates the wearerās needs
I love retcons for wardrobe malfunctions. I hope they explain why Riker needed such short sleeves in First Contact š
Worf is not a good example of what Klingons donāt do, having been raised by humans. Good point with Kor, though.
The information broker has had cosmetic surgery to resemble the puppet Balok used to appear intimidating in āThe Corbomite Maneuverā
I donāt think it specifies in the episode that the information broker had cosmetic surgery, does it? I wondered if this episode was trying to semi-canonize the Dassik. I donāt really care either way because that bit was hilarious.
The Dassik were supposed to be tall, so perhaps he has dwarfism.
