JetBrains to opt-in all non-commercial IDE users to training AI models - eviltoast

The new and updated data-sharing options will be released in the next couple of weeks with the upcoming 2025.2.4 update of JetBrains IDEs. Non-commercial users will get a notification about the updates in the terms of use. For holders of other types of licenses, if you never provided consent, nothing will change.

OP is not dishonest. JB is opting everyone in, and the fact that they say you can opt-out doesn’t change that fact.

And stop caping for corporations. They are not our friends. There are no good corporations.

Boiled down , it basically makes their free versions be spyware about any code. But anyone can opt out. But few will know what is going on.

I am a subscriber so it will not affect me.

Is this a bad thing? I think Yes and no. Most coding entered into the free versions is not significant enough to give consequences. Morally, I find it offensive and later could be opted in myself without knowing. That would be a big deal for me.

        Most people will never notice.

It does remind me of the saying: if something is free, you are the product.

I thought about that after I typed it. “Should I put in a disclaimer that this is limited to for-profit” companies? Nahhh, it will be fine”

No, OP is 100% on the money. Your tongue is for tasting food and drinks, not boots. You are being dishonest to yourself and dont even know it.

with the upcoming 2025.2.4 update of JetBrains IDEs.

Once again my policy of never letting software auto-update itself comes out on top.

        You can opt out,

You see, the issue I have is that it should be OPT IN. But it can’t be opt in because nobody would and how can they get more free data for the AI grinder then??

you will know when as you get notified

After you have been automatically opted in? I’ll wager that there will be a lovely dark pattern that conveniently hides the opt out below the visible “what’s new” text in a popup, requiring you to scroll down to see it, because I’m a jaded cynic.

After you have been automatically opted in

We will see about that. If it works like other changes you will be notified during the startup with direkt menu deep Link to the setting. If not, yes i will be angry on that and I will inform local authorities (Office for Data protection) because this would violate most likely the GDPR.

What me pisses me off is misleading and incomplete information.

nothing special to this post, more in general.

The quote given by OP is dishonest and I don’t get why?

You can opt out of this collection, thq quote seems like those users are fucked and that simply is not true.

JetBrains is one of the good companies.

We are asking our users to help with this, and here’s how it works: For companies: Admins can enable data sharing at a company-wide level. To support early adopters, we’re offering a limited number of free All Products Pack subscriptions to organizations willing to participate while we explore this program. For companies that are not willing to opt in to the program, nothing changes, and as always, admins are in control. For individuals on non-commercial licenses: Data sharing is enabled by default, but you can turn it off anytime in the settings. For individuals using commercial licenses, free trials, free community licenses, or EAP builds: Nothing changes. You can still opt in via the settings if you are willing to share data with JetBrains (and your admins, if any, allow it).

The quote given by OP is dishonest and I don’t get why?

The OPs quote looks pretty honest to me. This is right from the link:

You can opt out of this collection,

Right, but its OPT-IN by default. Thats bad company behavior. Let users choose if they want to OPT-IN. Don’t turn it on for your users without their consent.

thq quote seems like those users are fucked and that simply is not true.

OP did not say those users are fucked. If I’m mistaken, please point out where they did.
