I’ve literally heard over 5 people over a few months (professionals in their fields) say FLUSHED out when referring to ideas or concepts. It drives me insane. I blame TikTok! No i have no idea what is causing it. My SO has noticed it as well.
A friend of mine uses “generally” instead of “genuinely” and it requires all of my self control not to correct them every time.
Same, except “weary” and “wary.”
I’m both weary and wary of people who confuse those words.
Last night I learned the word “chary,” which just confuses matters farther!
Than you chary much!
You’re welcome, but warily.
My girlfriend always uses effective when she means efficient. I tried to explain the difference several times, but I gave up.
Well to be fair, efficiency implies effectiveness. You can’t make something efficient without it being effective first.
I think it’s TikTok auto subtitles misunderstanding fleshed for flushed and then people seeing it and propagating the error (like your vs you’re)
And then there’s the then / than pandemic.
Ans the affect / effect outbreak…
There was a time when language pedants just used Latin so they wouldn’t be bothered how living languages change all the time.
Modern pedants prefer the “old man shakes fist at cloud” style of bemoaning change they notice in the world.
